Ci Qi Kou, Chongqing
Ci Qi Kou is an ancient town in Chongqing city with a history of more than thousand years, just as people always said “One flagtone raod, and one thousand years’ Ciqikou”. It was named as it had supplies large sum of chinaware dating during Qing and Ming Dynasty. Here you will find many outlets for craftwork, groceries and the like as well as a horologist, photography supplies, drugstore and a tempting supply of roasted nuts and seeds.Now the tonw remians as a symbole and miniature of past Chongqing.
The old town is located in Shapingba district of Chongqing and on the west bank of Jialing River, taking up an area of 1.18 square kilometers. The majority of the houses date from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, periods during which many masterpieces of Chinese architecture were created. Much of the two and three storey construction is of bamboo and timber. Blue bricks and pillars set off the snow-white walls that contrast in turn with vermilion doors and lattice windows. Black tablets and lanterns adorn the gates to complete the authentic and traditional appearance of the properties.
Ciqikou is the source of Baci Culture. Lots of big-names during the Anti-Japanese War once lived here, such as Guo Moruo, Xu Beihong, Feng Zikai, Fu Baoshi, Ba Jin, Bing Xin and etc. Ding Zhaozhong, a well-known Chinese-born American scientist studied here for many years during his childhood.
As an ancient town, there are obsolutely lots of custom, most of which have lasted till now. The recorded ones includes baibazi, xingbang, family's ancestral temple, Pao Brother, temple fair, dragon dance, dragon boat race, buddies of Sichuan opera, chuntai drama as well as pingshu and teahouse culture.
