Fly to Xiamen on the first day of 2007
Beijingers greet the new year 2007 peacefully, no firecrackers, no big gathering. I began the new year with a small business networking in Xiamen. Xiamen is a about two and half hours'flight from Beijing. It is an off-coast in Fujian province of south-east China. Actually the city itself is an island. The island proper covers an area of 128.14 square kilometers, with a length of 13.7 kilometers from south to north and a width of 12.5 kilometers from east to west which is the fourth largest island of Fujian province. At 8:30 I left home and drove to Beijing Capital Aiport. The two-day-ago's snow is still all areas, making the first day of the new year a kind of festivity. The traffic was slight with fewer vehicles and pedestrians on the roads mainly due to the 3-day long holiday ranging from Jan.01 to 03,2007. The airport expressway looked unusually open and spacious with light traffic. The views flanking the highway was amazing! The trees were all snows, resembling the crystal diamonds. On the airport highway, I also found there was an overpass running parallel under construction for the light city train connecting Beijing Airport and downtown Beijing. It was learned that the train would be built for the 2008 Games. It would take about 20 minitues for the transport as planned. Beijing is right now really like a huge construcion site, a city under scaffolding. My plane was delayed for about two hours. People seemed more patient than before mainly because of the new year. Maybe people don't want to lose their temper and long for a smooth year. At 3:00 pm we landed safely at Xiamen Airport. It was a fine day, warm enough to wear a shirt. So my wear is not in the season. China is really a big country! |
