My Community - Shoe Repairman
Today is Sunday ( Jan 29,2007), sunny and warm. I go to the shoe repair shop in my community in the Chongwen District of Beijing. Two of my favorite leather shoes are a little bit worn out. I bought the shoes about two years ago at a big price, which were made in Britain. I have kind of unique feeling towards to the shoes. Unwilling to throw away the shoes, I decide to have the shoes repaired and have soles of the shoes changed. I know the shoe repairman. He is a young man, a Mr.Jia, from Shanxi Province. The repair shop is very small, only big enough to hold two or three persons. He says he sleeps on the second floor each night! Actually it is not a floor, it is a board suspended in the middle, big enough to house himself. His boss is from North-east China. He sleldom comes here. In the daytime, Mr. Jia is the only man in the shop. He says he earns around 1200 yuan ( less than US$ 200 per month ). I ask how his boss controls the business. He says his boss has equipped a monitor in the corner of the shop! I look at the monitor, feeling it is more like a decoration than a real monitor. He says his boss is very nice towards him. The small shop is full of sick shoes, domonstrating the good business due to the hard working and good service from Mr.Jia. His boss is a lucky man to have the luck to hire Mr.Jia. The change of the soles costs me RMB 60 ( around US$ 8 ). |
