Visit the Church of the Sacred Heart
| There are 15 Roman Catholic churches in Beijingsix in the city proper, ande the rest in the suburbs. The Catholic population of the capital numbers about 40,000
Also known as the North Church, the Church of the Sacred Heart is one of the four Catholic cathedrals in Beijing. It was built at the direction of a French pries in 1887. Badly dameaged during the 揷ultural revolution,?it has been restored, but unfortunately the old stained-glass windows are gone forever. The grounds are well tended with trees flowers and grottoes. An elderly volunteer caretaker took us inside, and we found that the pillars were all painted bright red and green-quite a contrast to the pastel blue and white of the exteriou. Our guide told us that the pillars had been blue but the restorers had decided that glaring red and green looked more Chinese. The church has two towers, with a bell in each. Our guide rang the one above the choir loft, but said that the one in the other tower is too heavy for one person to ring. There was formerly a pipe orga in the church ,one of only three of its kind in the world(the others being in Paris and Shanghai),but it was dismantled during the 揷ultural revolution.擻r How to get there 33 Xishiku Dajie Xi抋nmen,Xicheng District. ???????????33?? |
