It is rich in tourist resources and 1991 Zhujiajiao was listed as one of the four famous ancient cultural towns in Shanghai. It is nicknamed as "Shanghai's Venice" and "Shanghai's Hollywood".
Zhujiajiao has a long history dating back to Song Dynasty (960 - 1279). As early as in Song Dyasty, Zhujiajiao became a village fair, mainly thanks to its convenient location. Later it grew into a brisk town with prosperous commerce due to its much developed waterway transport. It was turned into a large booming town in Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). It became the trade center in the west of Qingpu area in Qing Dynasty, a large distribution center for the surrounding villages.
Now Zhujiajiao has fairly well preserved its anccient buildings and layout. It display its history through its plentiful stone bridges, slab stone paved lanes, canals, ancient residential houses, pavilions, workshops, rice shops, banks, spice stores, old post office, theatre stage and more.
Though the recent overdevelopment poses a great damage to the village's image - many places have been turned into the large-scale shopping and entertainment complexes, it is still worth your time to visit an ancient water town on your short trip to Shanghai.
