Hi Reina:
I just wanted to let you know that Neil, Herb and I were extremely happy with our time in Beijing with Annie. We all had a fantastic experience that we won’t ever forget. She was extremely knowledgeable and friendly and we all had a great time.
Could you please ask Annie to drop me a line with her email address; I can’t find it and I want to thank her personally.
Thanks again!

World War Two is a broad term including scores of conflicts with different starting and finishing dates. To most Chinese, World War Two started with the Marco Polo Bridge incident on July 7th,1937 that marked the beginning of official Chinese resistance, the start of Sino Japanese War, an important component of World War Two. The visit to the Marco Polo Bridge 16 km in the outside of Beijing adds some dimension to locate your information on the war. The Tunnel Warfare site in Jiaozhanghu in Shunyi district 40 km in northeast of Beijing helps you see the war from another perspective. Back to the downtown Beijing, the Unerground City ( a system of tunnels, bunkers, and air raid shelters built in 1967-79 ) showcases a special time of the unbroken war between China and former Soviet Union in later 1960s.
Beijing War Memory One Day Trip Tour Code: BWM-01 Departure: Daily Duration: 1 day Pick-up point and time: Your Hotel in Beijing around 8:00am Finishing point and time: Your Hotel in Beijing around 6:00pm Payment Types: Cash, Credit Cards, Wire We speak: English
Itinerary: Pick up from your hotel by our English speaking tour guide around 8:00:am. Take a private vehicle for the Tunnel Warfare Site at Jiaozhuanghu Village in Shunyi District, some 40 km northeast of the downtown Beijing. Arriving at the site at about 09:30am. The Tunnel Warfare Memorial Hall is devided into two sections: the exhibition hall and the orignal tunnel site. In the exhibition hall, there are lots of pictures and artifacts on show depicting that period. Behind the hall is the real tunnel for your exploration and experience. The renovated tunnel open to the public is about 800 meters long. Inside the tunnel, you can find individual blindages, headquarters, meeting rooms, numerous hidden gun holes, warehouses etc. The holes and entrances usually are out of your expectation, hidden under a straw mat inside a house, down a well, the kangs, kitchen ranges, hogpens, donkey slots, wardrobes etc. This allowed flexible movement or exit. During the Anti-Japanese war starting from the year 1937, the Chinese Communist forces or local peasant guerrilla forces used successfully the tunnel war tactics against the Japanese (and later Kuomingtang during Chinese Liberation War from 1945 to 1949 ).
Finishing your tour of the tunnel warfare site around 11:00am and return to the downtown Beijing around 12:50 for Chinese lunch. After lunch, visit Beijing Underground City ( a system of tunnels, bunkers, and air raid shelters built in 1967-79 ). Its entrance is 62 West Damochang Street, Qianmen, near Tiananmen Square. Beijing's underground city was first constructed during the Cultural Revolution in 1969 and finished in 1979 by more than 300,000 Beijing citizens in preparation for a possible nuclear attack from former Soviet Union. In 1969, the bloody China-Soviet border conflicts in northern Heilongjiang province caused the idea of the construction of subterranean bomb shelters in case of nuclear attack. The tunnels wind for over 30 kilometers and occupies an area of 85 square kilometers under the surface. It covers a thousand anti-air raid structures. Thankfully the elaborate tunnels were never used for the real defense purposes. Today the underground city is served as one of least known tourist attractions in Beijing. It is said that the tunnels link up to Tian'an Men Square, and the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven etc. Also, all the other cities in China have underground cities as well built during that time. But only a small part of the underground city is open to the public in Beijing. Inside you can walk around some of the tunnels. You will find the vacant facilities once used as warhouses, hospitals, restaurants, schools, reading rooms, factories, theaters, shops etc. The temperature inside is kept at 20 degrees Celsius all year round. You also can find some nostalgic Chinese slogans on the wall left from that period, such as, "dig deep", prepare provisions and not to seek hegemony and "dig deep" and "win the fight against American imperialists and Soviet revisionists". The only present activity you can find in the tunnel is the underground silk workshop where you can see the entire silk-making process, selling pillow covers and pajamas and so on.
Your tour of the underground city is finished around 3:00pm. Then move on to the Marco Polo Bridge ( Lugou Qiao - Marco Polo Bridge ). It is located in the ancient town - Wanping. It is one of earliest stone arch bridges, about 16 km in the outside of Beijing. On July 7th, 1937, the bridge entered China's history when the Japanese Kwantung Army began its war to conquer China. On that day Japanese troops illegally took up a railway junction near Wanping and the fighting started. It is later known as the "Marco Polo Bridge Incident". This is regarded by many historians to be the date when the war between China and Japan started. During the 8 years, Japan occupied most of China and killed millions of Chinese. The war ended with the end of WWII. If time permitted, you will be arranged to visit the Chinese Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall next to the bridge. The Anti-Japanese Aggression War Memorial Hall has an area of 23,780 square meters with its total construction acreage of 10,190 square meters. The two east and west halls exhibit numerous historic cultural relics, treasure documents and photos of the whole national resistance against the Japanese aggression army under the guidline of China Communist Party's "National United Front to Anti-Japanese Aggression" principle. By the way, the the Marco Polo Bridge itself is worth seeing. The bridge is 260 meters long and has 250 marble bars supporting 485 carved stone lions. it was first built in 1192, one of the few cultural relics left from Liao Dynasty. In 1751, Emperor Qianlong of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) personally wrote the poetic titles for the 8 views in Beijing, including the "Lugou Xiaoyue" tablet carved with his words which still stands by the bridge. The bridge has been there for 800 years.
