Soong Ching-ling Memorial Hall
Soong Ching-ling was the wife of Sun Yat-sen,the leader of the modern Chinese democratic revolution,and later honorary chairman of the People’s Republic of China.Her former residence was a building renovated under the direction of the late Premier Zhou Enlai and presented to her in 1962.
It stands on a site which was owned by Prince Chun,the father of the last Qing emperor,Pu Yi.Prince Chun used it as a garden,but all the building s in it had fallen into disrepair.The solidly built two-story house that Soong Ching-ling lived in is a combination of Western and Chinese architectural styles, with aouble-glazed windows and spacious rooms.
The house remains much as Soong left it, with her manual typewriter,library of English books,and tributes and gifts from all over the world.A bust of Soong stands before the entrance.There is a special exhibition hall diviede into,with numerous photographs, documents and oter memorabilia,dating back to her childhood.
The garden is elegantly laid out,with rockeries and ponds,and palnte with pines, cypresses and flowers.Halls and pavlilons in traditional style are linked by winding corridors Water from the nearby Houhai(Rear Lake)flows through an underground channel to form a stream.
