Statue Dating from the Northern Wei Dynasty
A stone image of Buddha erected in 489 during the Taihe Reign of Emperor Xiaowen and located in Che’erying Village near Wengquan in Beijing’s Haidian District is the oldest statue of Buddha extant in Beijing.
Long ago, there was a temple named Stone Buddha Temple here. Standing 2.2 m tall, the statue is said to have been modeled after the emperor, the seventh emperor of Northern Wei. Rulers of the Northern Wei had been a branch of ancient nationality of Sienpi in north China.
Emperor Xiaowen issued many decrees to promote unity between the Sienpi people with other ethnic peoples, for which he was held in high esteem. On the back of the statue are carved many small statues of Buddha as well as exquisite designs and carvings of a dozen flying Apsaras (female musicians).
