Tanzhe Temple
Built over 1,600 years ago, Tanzhe Temple is one of the most ancient Chinese Buddhist temples. Its original name was Jiafu Temple. It got the name Tanzhe from the presence of a pool (tan), and a grove of tree-bristle cudrania (zhe) nearby. However, it is not widely known that Xiuyun Temple is the site’s official name.
The temple has been repaired and expanded many times throughout the ages, and reached its present dimensions at the end of the 17th century. It covers 6.8ha, with the main Buddhist temple built at the center, the residence of eminent monks and imperial guests to the east, and a group of scripture halls and shrines to the west.
There are the upper and lower pagodas on the slope outside the entrance gate and a meditation room and relaxation pavilion as well as dragon pool and imperial table on the mountainside behind.
