Xihuang Temple
This Gelugpa Lamaist temple is situated outside Anding Gate in the northern part of the urban area of Beijing. It was built in 1652. This sect is also called the Yellow Sect, because the monks wear yellow hats and robes. So the temple is also known as the Yellow Temple.
Tot the east, there used to be another Tibetan Buddhist temple, built in 1651 and known as the eastern yellow temple, to distinguish it from Xihuang Temple. The temple has long since vanished.
In 1780, when the Sixth Panchen Lama, Dadain Yexe, came from Tibet to Beijing to congratulate Emperor Qianlong on his birthday, he stayed in this temple. Later in the same year, the Panchen Lama died in Beijing.
Emperor Qianlong ordered a stone pagoda to be built to the north of the temple to preserve the holy man’s remains and named it Qinghua Pagoda. The stone pagoda bears traces of Indian, Tibetan and Chinese architectural styles. It is still well preserved.
The Tibetan Buddhism Institute is housed in the temple, which receives leading Tibetan and Mongolian monks for advanced studies all the year round.
