Yong’an Monastery
This monastery is located on the southern slope of Qionghua Ialet in Beihai Park. The islet has been an imperial garden since the 11th century. In 1651, on the site of a ruined hall of the previous dynasty, a Tibetan-style white pagoda was built.
A monastery was built later in front of the pagoda, and since then Qionghua Islet has been known as White Pagoda Monastery. After it was rebuilt in 1743, it was formally named Yong’an Monastery.
The White Pagoda is located in the center of the islet, facing south. It is the highest point of Yong’an Monastery. Shanyin Hall, Pu’an Hall, Zhengjue Hall, Dharma Hall, entrance gate and the archway extend south one after another.
The islet is linked to the shore by Yong’an Bridge. The roof of all the major structures of the monastery is covered with yellow and green glazed tiles. The roof ridge of the halls is in the form of a dragon.
Exotic stones, pavilions and platforms arranged around the monastery give the islet the appearance of an imperial palace.
