Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is the first bridge over the Yangtze River designed and built by China’s own technical strength. Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is the pride of Chinese people and a proof of the spirit and ability of the Chinese people in Mao Zedong’s era.
The construction of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge started on January 18, 1960. Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is a double-decked road-rail truss bridge. Its rail bridge was open to the traffic in September, 1968 and the road bridge was finished in December, the same year.
The bridge is composed of the ramp bridge and the main bridge. Its main bridge is 1577m long and the ramp road bridge is 19.5m wide and 3012m long, wide enough for four trucks to run abreast. The lower deck rail bridge is 6772m long and 14m wide, double rails wide enough for two trains going in opposite directions.
At the both end of the bridge there are a couple of bridge towers with 70 meters long. You can take a lift to the base of a 70m bridge tower. Three red flags atop the bridge towers, which represent People’s Commune, Great Leap Forward and General Path popular in 1959s.
150 couple of white magnolia shaped road lamps on the bridge are arranged in an orderly manner. At nightfall, when all the lamps are lit, the bridge looks extremely beautiful.

How to get to Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge
First take subway line 1 and get off at the station of Gulou (鼓楼). At the northeast corner, you will find the Gulou Bus Station of Bus No.67. Get on the Bus 67 and get off at the last stop – Nanbao Park (South Bridge Tower Park).
Take d17 bus to Jiangshan · Daqiao North Road Station (江山路·大桥北路站), get off and walk 1600 meters to Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge
