Plan your Shanghai tour? If you arrive into Shanghai or depart from Shanghai by flight, you ought to check the airport code on your boarding pass to make sure which airport you are going to use in Shanghai: PVG for Shanghai Pudong International Airport and SHA for Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport.
This article is a quick guide about how to use public transport either going from Shanghai Pudong Airport to the city or from the city to the airport. If you’ve used the piece and finds necessary updates, please leave a message or feedback. Thanks!
T1 and T2 at Shanghai Pudong Airport
First , check your boarding pass or air-ticket to know which terminal you are going to use. Shanghai Pudong International Airport has two terminals – T1 and T2. T2 and T1 parallel from south to north and are connected by 700-meter long corridor.
Basically there are more scheduled flights ( international or domestic ) at Terminal 2 than Terminal 1. But you still need to double check the right terminal you are going to use. Both T2 and T1 are used for domestic and international arrivals and departures. Different air companies use different terminals.
Third Floor for Departure (T1 & T2)
The departure halls ( both T1 & T2) where you fly out from Shanghai are on the third floor.
Second Floor for Arrivals (T1 & T2)
The arrival halls where you meet and greet passengers are on the second floor both for T2 and T1.
Both Maglev and Metro on the Second Floor
Both Maglev and Metro are on the second floor in the mid-area of the 700-meter long corridor connecting T1 and T2. So if you are going to take Maglev, you should go to the middle part of the long corridor connecting the two terminals. If you arrive at Shanghai Pudong Airport by Maglev, you find yourself on the second floor between the long corridor linking the two terminals.
The Metro Line 2 is perched on the middle of the long corridor linking the two terminals. Metro Line 2 connects Shanghai Pudong International Airport with the downtown and other parts of Shanghai. So you can easily take the metro from the Pudong airport to the city or from the city to the airport.
Taking Subway Line 2 from Pudong Airport to Hongqiao Airport Shanghai takes one and half hours at the ticket price of 15 Yuan.
Remark: If you are going to take metro line 2 from Pudong airport to the downtown or vice versa, you have to get off at the station of Guanglan Road (广兰路) and interchange for Pudong airport or downtown direction.
First Subway Train leaves from Pudong Airport at 06:00am; First train arrives at Pudong airport at 06:35am
Last Subway Train leaves from Pudong Airport at 22:00; last trains arrives at Pudong Airport at 22:35
If you prefer to take Shanghai Maglev from Shanghai Pudong International Airport, your final stop is Longyang Road (龙阳路), from where you are able to interchange for Metro Line 2.
Ground Floor for Buses & Taxis
The ground floor is for public transportation like taxi, public bus, and airport shuttle bus and long-distance buses going to the nearby cities like Hangzhou, Huzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi, Suzhou and more.
If you take taxi from Pudong airport to the city centre or vice versa ( about 45km), basically you’d pay 150 yuan (day) and 200 yuan ( night).
Shanghai Pudong Airport Shuttle Bus Lines
Shanghai Pudong International Airport also operates several airport shuttle bus lines. Taking the shuttle bus from Pudong Airport to Hongqiao Airport takes you one and half hours.

Hello khalid,
Do you mean you want to go from Pudong airport to the East Nanjing Road in Shanghai? If yes, then you can take the subway line 2 directly from Pudong airport and get off at the station of East Nanjing Road.
hi we will be visiting china staying in Zhanjiagang.
we want to visit the Great wall of China.
what will be the most cost effective way of getting there from Zhanjiagang.
can we do it in a day or do we need more time.
Hello ashley,
Do you mean the city of Zhanjiagang under the jurisdiction of Suzhou? You may first go to Shanghai, then either take highspeed train or flight to Beijing. You’d better to stay overnight in Beijing for the hike on the great walld due to the 1200km long distance between Beijing and Shanghai.
what is the cost of the Maglev train to Longyang road
Regards
Hello j.moule,
RMB 50 for single trip.
hi, i with my parents will be at 11:50 pm at night on hongqiao intl airport. from there we have to go pudong airport. can you please help me if there is shuttle bus service to go there at night? or any convenient and cheap route?
Hello Shammi,
As far as I know, both shuttle buses and subway lines are not available at the such late hour. Maybe you have to take a taxi. Have a good time!
Hello we are wanting to catch the train from shanghai to beijing but need a taxi from our hotel in city centre to train station do you know roughly how much this would be and do we need to go to hongqiao station to catch the high speed train thanks sandra
Hello Sandra,
The taxi fare from downtown Shanghai to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Staition costs about RMB 100. You may also take subway line 2 to go to Shanghai Railway Station.
Hello Sandra,
If you want to go from Pudong airport to Hongqiao Railway Station, you may take subway line 2 directly from Pudong airport to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. Or taking a taxi: RMB 204
from pudoing airport to Jing an temple by public bus or by Metro?

Hi, What if the best option for us to take if we arrive at the pudong airport at 11:45 PM and we have to go to the Bund??
Thank you very much
Hello Emily,
You have to take a taxi from the airport to the Bund at such a late hour.
Hello
I need your advice about my very short visit to Shanghai 🙂
My friends and I (5 persons) will go to Osaka and transit Shanghai at 07.00 am. My next boarding to Osaka is around 6.30 pm. Would you please give me some advice about any place that I could make a quick tour in Shanghai? The Bund/Nanjinglu? Does it take much time?
Thank you very much.
Hello Poom,
Yes, you may take the airport shutt bus or the subway line 2 and get off at the Nanjing Road or People’s Square where you can have a walking tour of Nanjing Road and the Bund. It takes about 2 hours to walk around Nanjing Road and the Bund.
We would appreciate some advice on traveling from Pudong Airport to Salvo Hotel Shangai, Guangdong Rd, Huangpu District. We arrive at the airport on Sunday 11 May, 7.30 am.
Regards Vicki
Hello Vicki,
Just take subway line 2 directly from Pudong airport and get off at the station of East Nanjing Road ( 南京东路) and exit from Exit C. Then walk to your hotel ( 630 meters ).
Hi, I’m staying at SSAW hotel near yuyuan station and I need to pick up my partner from pudong airport in 2 days. I want to take the metro line 2 but how long does it take and what’s the best route in getting back to SSAW from pudong?
Hello James,
Your hotel has a good location. You just walk to the nearest metro station of Subway Line 10 from your hotel and take the subway line 10 to the north direction and get off just at the next station of East Nanjing Road (南京东路), then interchange for subway line 2 to the east direction and get off at the final station of Pudong Airport.
Back from Pudong airport to your hotel, use the same subway line: take subway line 2 directly from Pudong airport and get off at the station of East Nanjing Road and interchange for subway line 10 to the south direction and get off at the next station of Yuyuan (豫园), walk to your hotel ( 500 meters ).
Note: while taking subway line 2 to Pudong airport vice versa, you need to interchange at Guanglan Station (广兰), no worry, just follow the throng. Have a good trip!
Hello,
I am going to the Hotel Indigo Shanghai on the Bund.
What would be the best routing if I took the Maglev?
Hello Roger,
You may first take maglev from Pudong airport and get off at the final stop of Longyang Station where you interchange for Subway line 2 and get off at the station of Nanjing East Road ( 南京东路), exit from exit 3 and take a taxi for your hotel- Indigo Shanghai on the Bund.
The taxi ride from Exit 3 of Subway line 2 at East Nanjing Road to your hotel is about 3 km, costing you about RMB 18.
By the way East Nanjing Road is a pedestrian only street, so you need to find a side road to locate a taxi. Have a good time in Shanghai!
Kia Ora from New Zealand
We will be arriving at Pudong airport around 19.00.
We are staying at The Bund Hotel, Huangpu,Shanghai.
How do we get there…
Hi again
We are flying Shenzhen Airlines ZH1216 [operated by Air China] to Xian at 8.30am.
What time would you suggest leaving The Bund, Huangpu and which terminal at Pudong do we need to go to.
Hello Lee-Anne,
1) Take a taxi from Pudong airport to your hotel (the Bund Hotel ): 48km, and approx.taxi fare RMB 180
2) Take subway line 2 directly from Pudong airport and get off at the station of East Nanjing Road (南京东路) and exit from Exit 4 and walk to your hotel ( 860 meters )
Note: When you take the subway from the airport to the station of East Nanjing Road, you have to interchange at Guanglan Road Station ( 广兰路站 ). Don’t worry. Everybody has to interchange and just follow the throng.
Check the Shanghai Subway map for more information – Guanglan Road Station and East Nanjing Road Station:
http://www.shmetro.com/zbdt/overall/english_large.jpg
Hello Lee-Anne,
Personally, I suggest you leave your hotel at 5:30 am and take a taxi to the Pudong airport. For domestic flights, you are required to be at the airport 2 hours in advance. That means you should be at the airport at 6:30am. So you’d better leave your hotel at 5:30am.
What is best way to get from Pudong International terminal 2 to Broadway mansions hotel Bei Suzhou Road Hongkou. Is it worth taking Maglev to Longyang Rd station then taxi or simply taxi from airport.?
Hello John,
Yes, you have three choices to go from Pudong airport to your hotel. Which is better depends on what you want to maximize the transfer.
1. Simply taking the taxi from Pudong to your hotel: comfortable,hassle-free, but you miss Maglev experience.
2. First Maglev and then taking a taxi from Longyang Station to your hotel, good, but you have to hail a taxi.
3. First take Maglev and get off at Longyang Station, then interchange for subway line 2 and get off the 6th station of East Nanjing Road(南京东路) and exit from the Exit 6 and walk to your hotel ( about 1.2 km , a bit hard for you if you have a large suitcase.).
I arrive in Pudong Airport at 5am and have a connecting flight from hongqiao airport at 9am the same day. What is the best way to get from Pudong Airport to Hong qiao airport at the wee hours in the morning? Would appreciate your advise and also how much should i expect fares to be?
Thank you very much.
Hello Carmen,
Sorry for the delayed reply due to the internet failure here!
You’d better take a taxi directly from Pudong airport to Hongqiao Airport which takes about one and half hours.
I am going to have an 8 hours of layover at Pudong airport in shanghai on Nov 10. what should I do, or where should I go during those hours? a local wondering around? maybe? thanks
Hi Sam Chai,
You may take subway line 2 and get off at the station of East Nanjing Road ( 南京东路 ). Then you can walk along East Nanjing Road ( shhopping ). Then stroll along the Bund for the beautiful skyline of Pudong just opposite to the Bund. If you have more free time, you may take a taxi to Jinmao Tower in Pudong to have a panaromic view of the city.
Have a good time in Shanghai!
We have a 9 hour layover in Shanghai and wanted to go to Nanjing Road to shop. Is this possible and how long will it take to get there?
Hi Teri,
Just take the subway line 2 directly from Pudong airport ( or Hongqiao airport ) and get off at the station of East Nanjing Road. One way subway ride takes about one hour.
Hi Teri
I will arrive to Pudong Airport at 2.15 pm on March 15, What is best way to get to Les Suites Orient Hotel at the Bund??
Thank you!!
Hi Claudia,
Just take the subway line 2 directly from Pudong airport and get off at the station of East Nanjing Road and exit from Exit No.03 and walk to your hotel ( 1.4km ). Alternatively taxi from Pudong airport to your hotel ( about 155 yuan and 44 km ). Have a good time in Shanghai!
I will arrive Pu Dong Airport at 05.55am, What is the best way to get to Central Hotel Shanghai?
Wanting to go by train or would Taxi be the best way to go, Would appreciate your advise and also how much should i expect fares to be?
Thank you
Hi Phill,
Do you mean Central Hotel Shanghai (上海王宝和大酒店) at 555 Jiujiang Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai? If yes, you have the following two choices of transport:
1. Taking a taxi
Taxi fare: RMB 170 ( 50km )
2. Airport Shuttle Bus
Go to Terminal 1 at Pudong Airport take the Airport Shuttle Bus No.05 and get off at the 4th stop of Yan’an East Road and Zhejiang Middle Road, and walk north for about 700 meters to get to your hotel.
Note: It is a bit tricky to walk from the arrival bus station to your hotel. So you can choose to taxi to your hotel from the arrival bus station.
I will be arriving in Shanghai Pudong airport on 15.12.2016 at approximately 5.30 p.m. with my family in a group of 7 people and we are staying in Sofitel on Nanjing Road. How many passengers/luggage pieces can a taxi take? Is it only maximum 3 or can they take 4 pax in 1 taxi?
Hi Shirley,
Basically a normal taxi can hold 4 persons. But the back truck of a taxi, as far as I know, can only accommodate 2 large pieces of luggage. In your case, you may consider hiring a large van for the transfer. Below is the car rental service with driver ( only for your reference ):

Have a good time in Shanghai!

Given the fact that it is your first time to visit Shanghai, we suggest you take a taxi from Pudong airport to your hotel. Taxi fare about 170 yuan ( 48 km ). By the way, using the public system ( subway or bus ) is a bit daunting for a first-time visitor. Have a nice trip!

My family & I (4adults)shall be arriving in to Pudong International about 2.15pm on May 15.
Each of us would be having a piece of cabin size carry-on bag.
We would like to take a taxi direct to Tongli.
Would that be our best option?
What would the cost be like?
What other options are there?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Dear Edwin Yong,
Thanks for your inquiry!
Basically you have several choices listed below:
1) Take a taxi directly from Pudong to Tongli: about 600 yuan and hours
2) First take the shuttle bus from Pudong to Suzhou ( 82 yuan ), then change for the subway from Suzhou to Tongli
3) First take subway from Pudong to Hongqiao Railway Station, then take the high speed train to Suzhou Railway Station, where you change for the subway going to Tongli.
For some useful information, please check out the link: https://www.tour-beijing.com/blog/jiangsu-travel/suzhou-travel/how-to-visit-tongli-town
Hi Daniel,
