If one is taking a train from Shanghai to Hangzhou, which Railway station do you recommend and how much ahead of time do you recommend one buys a ticket? Many thanks!
You should go to Hongqiao Railway Station for the highspeed or bullet trains from Shanghai to Hangzhou. No need for prebooking the train tickets, just buy the latest train ticket and go since there are over 40 highspeed +bullet trains per day! For Hongqiao Railway Station, please check http://www.tour-beijing.com/blog/shanghai-travel/shanghai-transportation/shanghai-hongqiao-railway-station/
along with my family travelling to Shanghai by Air. From Shanghai, we plan to travel to Beijing by train. We are three members of family and will be carrying about 10 pieces of luggage, approx. 150 kgs. My question is whether we can carry that luggage with us in the train or we have to book it at the station. If we book it at the Shanghai Station, which station is preferable, how much time and money it takes and when will we receive our luggage in Beijing (will it come by same train or by some other train).
Each passenger is allowed to take a certain amount of carry-on baggage for free.
Children (children with free ticket included): 10 kg (22 pounds)
Diplomat: 35 kg (77 pounds)
Other passengers: 20 kg (44 pounds)
The total length of each item cannot exceed 160 cm.
Rod-shaped baggage should not exceed 200 cm in length and 20 kg (44 pounds) in weight.
Note: The above limitation is not applicable to wheelchair, which can be brought onto the train for free.
If the baggage exceeds the allowed amount (either by weight or size), please use the baggage transportation service.
Special Notice:
The luggage rack of G Train (High-Speed Electric Multiple Units Train) is too small for luggage in large or super sizes. There is no special rack or room for the large luggage either. It is suggested that tourists with large luggage should not carry it onto the G Trains. Go to the trains stations earlier to have your large luggage be checked and transferred by freight, and pick up it when you arrive at your destination.
Checked Baggage Transportation
Checked baggage refers to the bedding, clothing and books which are for personal use and other necessities for traveling. Wheelchairs for the disabled are also included. Currency, securities, cultural relics, jewellery, important documents and other valuables are not allowed in checked baggage. The weight limitations for checked baggage are 50 kilograms per piece. The minimum volume should be more than 0.01 cubic meters. Passengers can choose to transport checked baggage in the same train they are traveling on or it may be transported in advance. If it is transported in the same train, it can be collected as soon as you reach your destination. If it is transported in advance, the baggage will arrive on a later train. Staff will notify you to come and pick it up after it has arrived. Remember to collect it as soon as possible after being informed, as the station will only keep it for free for three days. Storage fees apply after that time.
There is no luggage car on D class train or G class train, so you can only transport checked baggage on normal train.
And there is no English speaking staff or English version statement in Baggage Transportation Department.
Therefore, it’s feasible for you to transport your luggage only if you can read & write in Chinese.
We recommend you to bring less luggage, or take flight instead.
We are going to Suzhou. Can we just go to any of the ticket booths to purchase the tickets? Are they all on the second floor ( F2 )?
Yes, it is quite easy and just buy your tickets from automatic machines or ticketing offices if you don’t like automatic machines. Ticket offices are also available on the first floor and B1.
I plan to change trains at the Hongqiao train station. The layover is 5 hours and I plan to go downtown. I there a left-luggage service at the train station?
Yes, there is a place for depositing your luggge in Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station.
Staying in the center (hotel) at Shanghai we like to travel by G-Train (5 hrs) to Beijing departing at approx 09.00 hrs am. How do we get intime to the Hongqiao R-station by subway ? We have normal luggage to carry. Do we need to pre-order those tickets ?
Hello Botter,
It is very easy to go from the city center of Shanghai to Hongqiao Railway Station. Just take Subway Line 2 and get off at the stop of Hongqiao Railway Station. If you haven’t booked your 9 departure train, you are advised to get to the train station earlier (2 or 3 hours in advance ) to buy the 9 departure trains. Have a nice trip to Beijing!
I will be going on G13 from Beijing to Shanghai on the G High speed train in early september. Two of us have two suitcases We are going First Class, and do we put our suitcases with us in the FC Cabin?
Many thanks,
John
Hello John,
No worry about that. There is a luggage area in the front of each coach by the door. So you leave your luggage in a luggage area near a door and keep your eye on them when your train stops at Jinan and Nanjing before it gets to Shanghai. G13 has 4 stops – Beijing, Jinan, Nanjing and Shanghai.
Hello,
I would arrive in Shanghai Pudong Airport in the late afternoon of late Oct 2012; planning to take a train to Hangzhou. So I have to take Airport Shuttle Bus Line 1 to Hongqiao Airport; walk to find Hongqiao Railway Station and buy a ticket for either G or D series train to Hangzhou.
Is the above procedure correct?
Also, to save cost, I intend to buy the 2nd class and would the tickets be sold out?
Thank you.
regards,
Jasmin LIM
Hello Jasmn,
Basically it is easy to buy your train ticket from Shanghai to Hangzhou on the spot when you get to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station.
From Pudong airport to Hongqiao Railway Station, you are highly advised to take subway line 2 directly from Pudong airport to Hongqiao Railway Station. Now Pudong airport and Hongqiao Railway station has been connected by Subwayl Line 2.
I saw a picture above that we can walk from the railway station to the Hongqiao airport terminal T2. As we will come to the station during winter time is it wise to walk or better take the subway. Thanks
Hi, I am travelling from shanghai to Beijing on the 1st September and returning on the 4 th September and i have 2 luggages, can i put this luggages in the railways station (Cloak room) for 4days and what are the charges and location of the cloak room.
Thank you
Thangamuthu
Hello Thangamuthu,
There are several places offering 24-Hour Luggage Deposit Service in Hongqiao Railway Station. Just check the signboards or ask the train station staff for the locations.
The charge for storing your luggage is contingent on the sizes of your left suitcases, basically ranging from CNY 30 to 50 per day.
Hello Kris Tan,
Hongqiao Transportation Hub is mainly composed of Hongqiao Airport, Hongqiao Train Station, Hongqiao Long-diantance Bus Station and Subway. No need to take subway from Hongqiaon Raiway Station to Hongqiao Airport. They are connected by a moving sidewalk corridor.
Hello, My destination is Ningbo. I land at Pu Dong. What do you recommend if I want to go by Bullet train?
Can I buy the ticket the same day of travel if I m traveling in the morning.
Thanks
Hello Kash,
First you take Shanghai subway line 2 directly from Shanghai pudong airport to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. Buy your bullet train ticket on the same day for Ningbo. There are many daily bullet trains between Shanghai and Ningbo.
Hello! I am planning to travel from Beijing to Shanghai by G train on Sept 29. Do you think it will be a really pack on that day as it is the holiday week? 1) What time should i arrive into Shanghai to avoid the crowd? 2) Is the subway station very far from the railway station?
Hello Shi Min,
Sept 29 is on the weekend, also happens to be the starting day for the week-long holiday for the two connected holidays – Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day. Traveling on Sept 29 will be more crowded than normal days. 17:00 – 21:00 will be peak hours in Shanghai. But as a cosmopolitan city, Shanghai is always busy!
Shanghai Subway Line 2 is linked to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. Arriving at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, just interchange for Subway Line 2 for downtown Shanghai.
Actually, Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station is part of Shanghai Hongqiao Transportation Hub, which also include Subway, Long-distance Bus and Hongqiao Airport, a huge transportation center! Beijing is like a farmboy before Shanghai.
Have a nice trip to Shanghai!
Hi,
1. Are there 24 hour restaurants at Hongqiao Railway Station?
2. What time is the first bullet train to Hangzhou?
Thank you.
Hello 24 hour Restaurants,
Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station is a part of Shanghai Transport Hub, which also includes Hongqiao Airport, Hongqiao Bus Station and Subway Station, a hug complex. There must some restaurants and cafes offering 24 hours service. I’m not sure whether McDonald’s or KFC offer 24-hour service, but I’m sure the McDonald’s or KFC at the Hongqiao airport offer 24 hours service. Hongqiao train stationa and Hongqiao airport are connected by a moving sideway, 15-minute walk.
As far as I know, the earliest train from Shanghai to Hangzhou starts at 06:15am.
How long will the Subway 2 ride will be from PuDong airport to Hong Qiao Railway Station?
We plan to take Nov. 4, G14 high speed train from Shanghai to Beijing. We would have our friends to buy G14 first class cabin tickets in advance for us. Tow of us have 3 luggages (75 cm height x 29 cm depth x 46 cm wide). Your prior answer stated that in each cabin, there is a luggage area at the end (front) of each cabin we can place our luggages, but we need to watch it at each stops between Shanghai and Beijing. Our questions are:
How many stops for G14 train on Nov. 4 from Shanghai to Beijing?
Will these 3 pieces of luggages of the specified dimension permitted for carrying on?
Is F1 or F2 for G train departure for Beijing?
Thank you very much.
Hello CC,
1. How long will the Subway 2 ride will be from PuDong airport to Hong Qiao Railway Station?
Basically it takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
2. How many stops for G14 train on Nov. 4 from Shanghai to Beijing?
G14: Shanghai 10:00, Nanjing South (南京南)11:07, Jinan West (济南西) 13:21 and Beijing South (北京南) 14:55 ( 4 hours and 55 minutes, 1318km )
So two stops in between. Normally it is very safe on the train.
3. Will these 3 pieces of luggages of the specified dimension permitted for carrying on?
It is all right for you to carry them.
4. Is F1 or F2 for G train departure for Beijing?
You first wait on the second floor and look for the signboard for G14. When it approaches the departure time for G14, paasengers will line up before the signboard. When it is time for embarking, passengers will be guided to take the escalator down to the platform on the first floor. So please wait on the second floor and look for the G14 sign. It is easy!
I am arriving to pudong international airport, and i want to go to yiwu by bullet train wich floor should i look to buy mi ticket and where do i have to pick the train.?
Thank you
Hello Ramil,
First take subway line 2 to get to Hongqiao Railway Station ( about 1.4 hours). When you arrive at Hongqiao Railway Station by subway, you are on B1 floor. Then you take an escalator to F2 (second floor) to buy your train ticket for Yiwu. F2 is also the departure floor ( a huge train waiting room ). You first wait on the second floor and look for the signboard for your train number. When it approaches the departure time for your train, passengers will line up before the signboard. When it is time for embarking, passengers will be guided to take the escalator down to the platform on the first floor (F1). So please wait on the second floor and look for your train number sign.
Hi, just a question on restaurants in Hong Qiao Railway Station itself
As we will have to get into the station early. Was wondering if there are any restaurants that will serve breakfast in the railway station itself as I understand that the 24 MacDonald’s is nearer to the airport side.
Hello Mia,
As far as I know, there are some restaturants (though not 24 hours) can serve passengers arriving early at the train station.
arriving at pudong airport on the 31st oct 2012,going by magvev bullet train to longyang station, then taxi to salvo hotel. question is,can i buy a bullet train ticket to beijing on the 5th november at the airport train station,or do i have to go to the hongqiao station. regards terry
Hello Terry Smith,
As far as I know, there is no train train ticket selling office in Pudong airport. There are over 60 daily trains from Shanghai Hongqiao railway station to Beijing. It is easy to buy your tickets at the station on the spot.
We are two seniors wanting to take the bullet train from Shanghai to Beijing, one way,on Tuesday Nov 6, first class. Is there someone to assist with luggage? We have four pieces, two at 50 pounds each. What will be our cost and what time do we need to be at station? Can we book on line= internet.
Hello Robert McIntyre,
Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station has “Red Cap Service” which assists seniors or people with too much luggage who need someone to take their luggage on to the train coach. The “red cap” refers to the porters with red caps who live on carrying passngers’luggage. RMB 10 for a large suitcase and RMn 5 for a handbag.
The official train booking online website is in Chinese, threre is no English train ticket booking online (official one). But don’t worry! You may take subway line 2 or take a taxi to Hongqiao Railway Station if you have too much luggage. You can buy your train tickets on the spot when you get to the train station since there are many highspeed trains from Shangahai to Beijing.
You are advised to go to Hongqiap Train Station early in the morning and buy the train tickets available for Beijing.
We are 2 seniors who are traveling today from the Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station each with 2 heavy suitcases. We are on the G train and in first class. When we get to the airport in a taxi where do we find the Red Cap Service and does that mean we will have them take our luggage to the train we will travel on? Will the luggage be in the same car where we will be traveling?
When we get to the Beijing station do you know if there is the same Red Cap Service we will use to get to a taxi?
Hello Carol Brown,
You can easily find the red-cap people who can carry your luggage. Yes, they can carry your luggage directly to your car, your own car. Yes, in Beijing, you also can find the same red cap service and carry your luggage to the taxi stand.
Hi,
It is easy to get tickets to Hangzhou South on 21 Dec? i would land in Pudong Airport @ 2.55pm. By the time i reach Hongqiao by train will be around 4.30pm. Will the train tickets sold out? can i buy return ticket at the same time? Where is the location of 24hr luggage deposit? is it at F2?
Thank You
Hello Terence Seah,
There are many highspeed trains running between Shanghai and Hangzhou. It is very easy for you buy the tickets, even around 4.30pm. Yes, you can buy a return ticket at the same time.
Information on 24hr luggage deposit:
1. All the left luggage offices are closed and out of service. The signs overhead pointing to Left Luggage (小件寄存) are no longer used.
Instead, there are 12 self-service baggage deposit areas on the second floor. The instructuons on how to use the self-service baggage storage are all in Chinese.
If you cannot handle the self-service left luggage lockers. If you may turn to “Enquiry Counter” for help, which is located in the center of the waiting hall on the second floor.

Hi
We plan to take 7:00AM G train from Shanghai to Beijing 1 Apr 2013 Tickets (first class) will be purchased several days in advance while in Xian. At what time should we arrive at train station? How long is metro ride from Peoples Square? Should we consider buying a later departure ?
Thank You
Hello Barbara Vitsky,
Basically, you are requested to be at the station half hour in advance. If you want go to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station for a 7:00am Shanghai to Beijing Train, you’d better pre-book a taxi to catch the train (at least 30-40 minutes by taxi). If you want to go to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, you’d better book a train starting around 9:00am since the metro ride from Peoples Square to the station takes over one hour. Have a nice trip!
good day! From salvo hotel, what is the better mode of transportation to get to hongqiao railway station to catch G14 train to Beijing? What time should we leave our hotel so that we have enough time to find our way inside hongqiao railway station to buy our tickets? We are two adults first time in china. Thanks a lot!
hi we plan to take bullet train from shanghai hongqiao to beijing. besides that, i want to know, can we buy an advanced ticket to another destination at the shanghai railway station. example, we want to buy train ticket from beijing to xian and xian to chengdu at the shanghai railway station?
TQ.
Hello Ayeen,
Basically, you can buy the train tickets for the trains which don’t start from Shanghai. Almost all the train stations are computerized, so you can buy train tickets to many cities, just like book air-tickets. Good journey!
Hello Jon Barangan
You should take the earliest train of subway line 2. The nearest subway station to your hotel is the station of People’s Square (人民广场), a large subway station. It is a 20-minute walk from your hotel to the station. The earliest train starts around 6:15am, so you should leave your hotel about 5:30am. Take the subway line 2 and get off at the station of Hongqiao Railway Station around 8:00am. Then buy your train tickets for Beijing.
By the way, you should check the subway station in advance for the smooth trasnfer. Have a good trip!
i m traveling from Hangzhou to Shanghai on 12-feb-2013. may i know which l train stationto go in hangzhou. can i purchase a ticket on the same day of travel? thank you
Hello Sheila,
You can easily buy your train tickets from Hangzhou to Shanghai on the spot on the same day.
Hangzhou has two major train stations – Hangzhou Railway Station (杭州站) and Hangzhou South Railway Station (杭州南站). Hangzhou Railway Station is for high-speed trains ( G trains ) while Hangzhou South Railway Station is for Bullet trains ( D trains ).
Hangzhou – Shanghai High-speed trains ( G trains ) : about one hour
Hangzhou – Shanghai Bullet trains ( D trains ): about one and half hour
Hangzhou Railway Station is located in the downtown while Hangzou South Ralway Station in the southern outskirts of Hangzhou.
Basically, it is better to choose Hazngzhou Railway Station (杭州站) for high-speed trains.
Hello,
I have never travelled on the trains in China before but I am planning to travel from Shanghai Hongqiao to Nanjing Railway Station next week, hopefully on the 19:00 G-train.
Do I need to purchase the ticket in advance? If it is not necessary, what time should I purchase the ticket on the day to ensure that I can get onto the 19:00 train?
Also, how much time in advance do I have to be at the Hongqiao Railway Station for my train ride?
Thanks a lot.
Cheers,
Sue
Hello Sue,
It is better to book your train ticket in advance. Of course, you can buy your train ticket on the spot when you get to Hongqiao Railway Station, but not 100% sure you will get the train ticket you want. You can change your trains since there are plentiful trains going between Shanghai and Nanjing. The earlier you get to Hongqiao Railway Station, the greater possibility of getting your preferred ticket.
For the 19:00 train, the ticket-checking time ( the time you are allowed to go on to your platform boarding your train) is usually set at 18:40, so you don’t have to get to the train very early if you have already purchasd your train ticket. Have a nice trip!
You will arrive at Nanjing South Railway Station ( check the link for more information: http://www.tour-beijing.com/blog/jiangsu-travel/nanjing-travel/nanjing-south-railway-station/ )
Hi,
I will arrive at Shanghai Hongqiao airport terminal 2 on Monday 15th of April at 10:45. Can I easily buy a ticket on the spot for a high speed train to Changzhou? (I don’t speak Chinese.)
Thanks a lot!
MarcB
Hello Marc Busscher,
Basically it is easy to buy a high-speed train ticket on the spot for the train from Shanghai to Changzhou.
