Baoding Shijiazhuang Major Attractions
Baoding is a city 140km south of Beijing. It is one of the 10 cities under the direct administration of Hebei Province. It has an area of 40,000 sq. kilometers, with a population of over 11 million. It is composes of three parts: one third of its territory lies in the Taihang Mountains in the west, one third part in the eastern plain area, the other third in the hilly land in between. it is a historic and cultural city.
Shijiazhuang is the capital of Hebei Province 280 km (174 miles) southwest of Beijing. It is a major railroad junction for northern China, and home of China"s largest pharmaceutical factor and a center for the study of traditional Chinese medicine. Shijiazhuang was little more than a village until the beginning of the 20th century, when it became a transit point on the railway from Beijing to Wuhan in the south. Construction of a second rail line between nearby Zhengding and the northern city of Taiyuan in 1907 led to further expansion of the city. Since the founding of the People"s Republic in 1949, Shijiazhuang has become a political and economic center of Hebei Province, and a center of the pharmaceutical industry.
The Western Qing Tombs
The Western Qing Tombs are situated in Yixian County, 120 km west of Beijing.( Hence the name Western Qing Tomb.) The Western Qing Tombs are a complex comprising some 14 tombs of the last Imperial Dynasty in China (1644-1911). The tombs contain the remains of emperors, empresses, princes and princesses, an emperor’s brother, and imperial concubines. Unlike previous dynasties, the Qing dynasty has two separate tomb complexes, namely eastern Qing tombs and western Qing tombs. There were altogether ten emperors in the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911). Four of them were buried in the Western Qing Tombs, 5 of them built their tombs in the Eastern one (120 km east of Beijing), the last emperor, Puyi, did not have his tomb built in neither of these two tombs.
The 4 tombs in Western Qing Tombs are:
Tai Tomb for Emperor Yongzheng (1678-1735, the 3rd emperor)
Chang Tomb for Emperor Jiaqing (1760-1820, the 5th emperor)
Mu Tomb for Emperor Daoguang (1782-1850, the 6th emperor)
Chong Tomb for Emperor Guangxu (1871-1908, the 9th emperor).
The Zhili Governor's Office Building
Baoding once serviced as the capital city of Zhili Province, the old name for Hebei Province from 1730 to 1911. This Governor's Office Building used as the office and living place of the governor and his family. From 1911 to 1949, this complex building used as the governmental office of Hebei Province. Since 1988, this building become a museum open to the public. Zhili Province was the only province that circled the capital. The Qing Dynasty's emperors regarded highly of the governors in Baoding. Very often it was the emperor who would choose his favorite official to be the governor. This governmental office building consist of three sections, the middle section, where most of the construction was built, the eastern side section and the western side section. Only the middle part is open to the public.
Zhaozhou Bridge
This bridge was constructed on the Jiaohe River about 2.5 kilometers south of Zhaoxian County, called Zhaozhou in ancient times.Zhaoxian County is about 30 km south east away from Shijiazhuang The bridge was first buil in A.D. 605 - 616. It was designed by a well-known Chinese mason, Li Chun. it is made of stone, 50.82 meters long and 10 meters wide. it has with an arch that is 7.23 meters high with a span of 37.35 meters without any piers to support the bridge. The stone railing and columns on the bridge were carved with spectacular dragon and phoenix designs.
Cangyan Mountain
This mountain is located about 78 kilometers southwest of the city of Shijiazhuang. It boasts nice weather and tall ancient trees. it becomes a popular mountain resort. It has a long history dating to the Sui Dynasty of more than 1,400 years ago. Cangyan resort features grandeur pavilions and monasteries, as well as an lavish palace built between two featuring rocks high above a gorge. Fortune Celebration Temple in Cangyan houses a fine statue of Princess Nan Yang, who was siad to be the eldest daughter of the Sui Dynasty Emperor Yang (A.D. 604-618) who became a nun here.
Great Prosperity Monastery (Longxingsi)
This temple is located in Zhengding County, about 20 km away from Shijiazhuang city. It was first built in A.D 586 in the sixth year of the rule of emperor Kai of the Sui Dynasty. Its main building has a three-storied main structure.The Great Benevolence Pavilion (Dabeige) features five eaves and houses a 23-meter-high bronze statue of a Goddess of Mercy with 42 arms. You also can find a wide range of historical monuments, tablets, statues, and other relics there.
