Confucius Temple and Imperial College
The Confucius Temple and Imperial College were built aligned with the former on the east side and the latter to the west, following the ancient Chinese custom of “temple on the left and the college on the right.”The main architecture structures of the Confucius Temple in Beijing consisted of the Dacheng Gate, Dacehng Hall and the Sage Worship Hall. “Dacheng” implies the Confucius represents the compendium of Chinese Culture.
The Imperial College was once the highest administrative organ in charge of education and national learning institutions in ancient China. The central building of the Imperial College is named Piyong, which is one of the “six great palaces” in Beijing, and the only ancient “school” remaining intact in the country today.
The building now contains an exhibition on Confucius’ life. The Imperial College has also preserved 190 valuable stone tablets engrave with The Stele of Thirteen Claasics, as well as 198 stone tablets bearing the names of Jinshi, a title during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties for those who passed the national exams.
