Chinese calligraphy and ink and wash painting are closely related, since they are accomplished using similar tools and techniques. Calligraphy is an art dating back to the earliest day of Chinese history, and it has been widely practiced throughout China till this day. It makes use of Chinese characters as its vehicle of expression, but people don't have to know Chinese to appreciate its beauty. This is because in essence, Calligraphy is an abstract art. While looking at a Western abstract painting, people don't have to ask, "What is it?" When viewing Chinese calligraphy, people need not ask, "What are the Chinese characters?"
Calligraphy has also led to the development of many forms of art in China, including seal carving, ornate paperweights, and inkstones.
