Beijing Changling Tomb
Located on the southern slope of the highest peak of Tianshou Mountain, the Changling is the joint tomb of Yongle, the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty, and his empress Xu.
It is the largest one in scale and earliest in construction time with best preserved ground buildings among all the Ming Tombs. The thirty-two giant pillars in the Ling’en Hall, Changling’s main building, made of nanmu logs remain as solid as before after more than five hundred years.
The hall covers 1,956 square meters, nearly the same as of the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City, but it exceeds the latter architecturally as all the columns, beams, etc. are made of nanmu, a durable high quality softwood. The 32 huge 12.58 meter-tall pillars of the hall are each made from a single nanmu tree trunk。
