Day By Day Itinerary
Day 01
Hike from Jiankou to Mutianyu Great Wall ( 10km, 5 hours )
Picked from your downtown hotel in Beijing at 8:00am by our English speaking experienced great wall tour guide and have 2.5-hour drive to the starting point at Jiankou Great Wall. We will start to hike eastward around 10:30 from the unrestored Jiankou Great Wall to the restored Mutianyu Great Wall.
For the first hour, we will clamber up the mountain and get to the wall atop the mountain ridge. Starting from Zhengbeilou Tower, then walk eastward ups and downs on the rugged wall along the mountain ridges past the wild and crumbling towers at Jiankou, and reach the restored and maginificent Mutianyu Great Wall. The hike takes about 4-5 hours for 8km trekking.
One hour scale up a steep hill to reach the wall, 2 hour hike along the unrestored section starting from Zhengbeilou Tower at Jiankou (Not advisable to scramble the section between the Upward Flying Eagle Tower and Zhengbeilou Tower ) and 1-1.5 hour walk along restored section at Mutianyu (many other tourists). You may get down from the wall at Mutianyu on foot ( half hour walking down ) or take a cable car or toboggan. Cable car and toboggan are optional.
Jiankou Great Wall is the greatest and most photogenic section of the Great Wall around Beijing. It is wild and totally unrestored. The tumbledown and crumbling brickwork snakes along a narrow mountain ridge. The Mutianyu Great Wall was built in 1404. The fortifications and the Great Wall here are featured by many watchtowers on overlapping mountain ranges. The wall, built with slabs of stone, is crenellated on both sides with bricks. The wall provided better protection and ward off attacks with Jiankou in the west and Gubeikou in the east.
After the 5-hour hike, drive to Gubeikou Village and stay in a local inn for overnight.

Day 02
Hike from Gubeikou to Jinshanling Great Wall ( 5 hours, 10km )
After breakfast, start your 10km hike around 9:00am to Gubeikou Great Wall. Gubeikou was a strategic pass of the Great Wall in ancient times, offfering an important access to Inner Mongolia and northeast of China. The main part of the Gubeikou Wall was first built in the Ming Dynasty 1368, and composed of two main sections - Panlongshan Great Wall (The Coiled Dragon Mountain Great Wall) and Wohushan Great Wall(The Crouching Tiger Mountain Great Wall). You are arranged to hike Panlongshan Great Wall, nicknamed after the name of the mountain on which it lies - Panlongshan Mountain. Panlongshan Great Wall is mostly unrestored, oroginal, less tourist and one of the most beautuful sections of the Wall around Beijing. The hike up and down (no cable car ) takes you approxi 2 hours.
After 2-hour hiking on Panlongshan Great Wall at Gubeikou, we have to get off the wall to keep off a military zone nearby which cuts off the wall. Instead, we have to walk through the path in the field for 1.5 hour. Climb over a hill and soon we will reach Jinshanling Great Wall where we are going to spend one hour for hiking and photo taking. The Jinshanling Great Wall was first constructed built in the Ming Dynasty. The famous general, Xu Da, of the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) supervised and directed the construction of the Great Wall. Later, Qi Jiguang led a number of defense works while guarding the north area in 1567. Each tower has its unique feature and look. There are relatively less crowded here at Jinshanling Great Wall, it is a nice place to explore the Great Wall around Beijing.
After the hike from Gubeikou to Jinshanling Great Wall, stay overnight at Local Inn at Gubeikou Great Wall for overnight.

Hike from Jinshanling Great Wall to Simatai West ( 5km, 3 hours )
After breakfast, start your Jinshanling Great Wall hike around 10:00 am. Today' hiking tour program includes the 3 hour's hike from the east section of the Jinshanling Great Wall to the west section of the Simatai Great Wall West for about 5 km ( 15 watchtowers ).
There is a cableway up to the Jinshanling Great Wall. If you take a cable car up, you will skip over 5 watch towers. We suggest you choose to climb up the mountain, so you can trek across 15 towers and 2 passes. The fact is that it is quite easy to walk up to the mountain and start your Jinshanling Great Wall hike.
The section of the Great Wall is wild, ruined, preserved, original and somewhere half restored with great photogenic opportunities. Basically it will take about 3 hours hiking along the wall. We have to get off the wall at Kylin Tower, and cannot hike to Simatai East Section direction due to the temporary closure of Simatai Great Wall.
