Wangjiang Tower, Chengdu
The Wangjiang Tower Park (The Tower of Overlooking the River) is on the south bank of the Jinjiang River in Chengdu. Covering an area of 170 mu, the park is built for the memory of Xue Tao, a famous poetess in Tang Dynasty.
The park is noted for its typical traditional Chinese style such as elegant stone fences along ponds and streams, aged trees and beautiful pavilions reflecting their images on the water. Xue Tao was in deep love with bamboo before her death, so inside the park, it is a world of bamboo sea gathering more than 150 kinds of bamboo all over the world.
Xue Tao thought bamboo represents diligence and austerity. The Wangjiang Tower is the tallest architecture in the park, which was built in the fifteenth year of reign of Emperor Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty. It has a height of 39 m with four levels. Delicate craftworks of human and animal figures are mounted on each ridge of every level of the tower.
Zaijin House (House of Washing Brocade in Jinjiang) near the Wangjiang Tower is shaped like a boat. The house is built in memory to Xue Tao's farewell to her close friend Yuan on a boat.
The Xue Tao Well is also an interesting place, because the well is used by the poetess to make papers, which she is invented. The Xue Tao Paper is very brilliant in color (sometimes in red) and much superior in quality to the traditional yellow and coarse paper used at that time.
