When to Visit in Harbin
Harbin is a paradise for winter ice and snow. Harbin is a good summer resort as well. For winter ice and snow addicts, the best time to visit Harbin is January and early February during the new year period (both the western and Chinese). The exciting yearly ice and snow festival normally starts from Jan 05 each year. Late February most of the exhibited ice and snow sculptures begin to melt.
Harbin is also a mecca for summer holidaymakers. Unlike the scorching weather elsewhere in summer, especially in southern China, Harbin is a great place to visit in summer, when the average temperature of hottest August is about 23 degree Celsius and plenty of rainfall arrives.
Harbin City Layout
Songhua River cuts Harbin city proper into two parts - North and South. The south part is the traditional city center dominated by Daoli Disrict housing most of the historical buildings of Russian influence that give the city its character. The two major commercial streets - Zhongyan Dajie ( a pedestrian street) and Zhaolin Jie run parallel to each other from northwest to southeast. Another pair of commercial streets also going parallel are Guogeli Street and Red Army Street.
Harbin Railway Station is located south of Zhongyang Dajie in the center of the town, opposite the long-distance bus station. Harbin West Railway Station is about 8 km to the southwest of Harbin Railway Station. Harbin airport is situated 45km west of the city proper.
North of Songhua River is the new development zone. Sun Island (Snow Sculpture Festival in winter), Polarland, Siberian Tiger Park as well as the Ice and Snow World (in winter) are all in the north of Songhua River.
The present number of taxis in Harbin is far from enough to meet the increasing taxi market demand. So, it is not easy and convenient for passengers to take a taxi in Harbin. Very often you have to wait much longer time before you can hail a taxi. Pre-booking a taxi is Harbin is highly recommended. Taxis cost RMB 8 for first 3km, then RMB 1.9 per km.
Airport to city center taxis takes 45 minutes (RMB 100-130). From airport, shuttle buses drop you at the railway station or CAAC office building (RMB 20).
A number of public buses stop at the railway station. The Public Bus No.01 goes from the station through the heart of the Daoli District. Bus 101 and 103 runs along from Shangzhi Dajie from Stalin Park to the railway station.
Harbin is not a big foreign tourist area, except in winter. The choice of hostels in Harbin is pretty limited with plenty of hotels at the top end, but not much for budget travellers.
