Location: As the seat of Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Dali City is in the northwest of Yunnan Province.

Area: 29,459 square kilometers
Nationalities: Bai, Li, Dai, Zhuang, Miao, Hui, Wa, Naxi, and Han Nationalities, in which Bai nationality takes the majority.
History: Dali is a city of long and rather glorious history, which could be traced back to 738. In 738 the Nanzhao Kingdom was established with Dali as its capital. After several decades of chaos the Kingdom of Dali emerged in 937.
The Kingdom of Dali established by Duan Siping in 937 was controlled by the Duan clan and survived until conquered by the Mongols in the 12th century. 1856-1872 Dali was the headquarters of the Panthay Rebellion led by Du Wenxiu.
The old Dali City was rebuilt in the early 1400s by the Ming Dynasty. What you see in Dali Old Town today is the rebuilt Ming town. Since then, the fortunes of Dali have declined and its importance as a cultural and economic centre in the Yunnan area have been overtaken by Kunming
Climate: Dali has a mild subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cwb), with short, mild, dry winters, and warm, rainy summers. Frost may occur in winter but the days still generally warm up to 15 °C or more. During summer, a majority of the days features some rainfall, and daytime temperatures rise to 24 °C. A great majority of the year's rainfall occurs from June to October.
Transportation: Air-Dali Airport is 13km to the east of Dali City.
Railway-Dali has rail connections to Kunming via the Guangtong-Dali Railway and Dali-Lijiang Railway. Dali train service is available to and from Kunming (1 day-train and 2 sleeping trains) and to Lijiang. As the railway network expands in Yunnan, train service will become available to Shangri-La County and Ruili.
Highway- The three biggest long-distance bus stations of Xiaguan (the "new city") are all located on Jianshe Road. There are daily trains and long-distance buses to Xiaguan from Kunming. From Xiaguan, there is a direct bus (No.4) to the Old Town of Dali. The bus No.8 links the railway station, the East and the North bus station of Xiaguan with the old city of Dali.
