Lanzhou Bingling Temple Grottoes
The Bingling Temple Grottoes are a series of Buddhist caves that are situated on a not easily accessible cliff face, about 35 kilometers west of Lanzhou. Construction on the first of the 183 caves began in 366 AD and continued for a thousand year. Most of them were carved during the Tang Dynasty.
The grottoes are made up of 183 grotto niches displaying 679 stone figues and 82 caly figures in addition to more than 900 square meters of murals. The highest statue is 27 meters while the smallest one is only 20 centimeters.
Cave No. 169 stands out for its steepness and delicacy among all of the caves. It covers an area of 200 square meters with many vivid, colorful Buddha sculptures that have various expressions and postures and can give visitors a quiet sense of solemnity. Cave No.171 has the largest Buddha sculpture of 27 meters high.
Despite being exposed to the elements for thousands of years, they remain treasures that enrich Chinese art history.
