History: Shanxi Province is one of the oldest territories in China with a history leading back to 2,000 years ago, it was the territory of the Jin State. After Emperor Qin unified China, the five shires of Taiyuan, Shangdang, Hedong, Yanmen and Daijun were established in Shanxi. Taiyuan was the third largest city along the Yellow River Basin during the Sui Dynasty. At the end of the Sui Dynasty, Li Yuan and his sons rose in revolt in Taiyuan, established the capital in Chang’an and regarded Taiyuan as “ Beijing ”.
Shanxi enjoyed a vital position and played an especially important role in troubled times during the Five Dynasties. Gu Zuyu, a man of the Qing Dynasty, pointed out in the Essentials of Historical Geography: to change the situation of the World, one must seize Shanxi. During the Ming Dynasty, the Shanxi Administrative Province was established in Taiyuan and later was renamed Administration Commission, ruling five prefectures and three cantons of Shanxi. During the Qing Dynasty, it was officially called Shanxi.
Climate: Shanxi enjoys a continental monsoon climate with four distinctive seasons: chilly winter, windy spring,, hot summer and mild autumn. Average January temperatures are below 0°C, while average July temperatures are around 21°C -26°C. Its annual precipitation average around 350-700mm, with 60% of it concentrated between June and August.
Transportation: The transport infrastructure in Shanxi Province is developed. There are airline, national highways and railways connected the province with other cities of China.
The province has compalted seven double-track electric railways extending to coastal ports such as Qinghuandao, Qingdao, Yantai and Lianyungang.
There are airports in Taiyuan, Datong, Changzhi, etc which connects Shanxi with more than 28 cities. The International routes linking Shanxi include Hongkong, Singapore, Russia and Japan.
With Taiyuan as a hub, the highway in Shanxi Province form a road network linking all the counties in the province and the cities in other provinces.
