Gansu Tour
In a shape of a dumbbell, Gansu Province runs along the narrow Hexi Corridor, the strategic section of the ancient Silk Road carrying goods from China to Central Asia. The Silk Road merchant caravan left behind the forts, ancient trading towns, bits of the Great Wall and the Buddhist statues. Gansu is reminiscent of the Silk Road in China ( Dunhuang & Jiayuguan).
Gansu is geographically divided into three parts - the Hexi Corridor, Gannan (Southern Gansu) and Eastern Gansu. Gannan is a minority patchwork woven by the ethinic diversty - Muslims, Tibetans, Bao'an and the Dongxiang people. They are said be the descendants of the 13th immigrants from Central Asia coming through the Silk Road for the trade and culture exchange. Dongxiang, Bao'an speak an Altaic language. From north to south, Gannan goes from the loess plateau to the fringe of Tibetan-Qinghai Plateau and from Muslim culture to Tibetan culture ( Linxia, Xiahe & Langmus).

Gansu Province is popularly divided into three areas - the Hexi Corridor, Gannan (Southern Gansu) and Eastern Gansu. You can visit the Hexi Corridor and Eastern Gansu all year round. Gannan is where Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (甘南藏族自治州) is located, which is teemed with the alpine meadows. So it is better to visit Gannan from later May to August.
Gansu rarely rains and it is very dry. Dust storms will come in spring. Winter is extremely cold from later November to March. If you plan to visit the Hexi Corridor (Wuwei, Zhangye, Jiayuguan and Dunhuang) and Eastern Gansu (Maji Shan Grottos), you'd better to come visit from May to October.
Though tucked back quite inland in the northwest China, Gansu Province is well connected with the outside world to the major cities in China by flights, trains and overland. The capital city of Lanzhou is the provincial transportation hub radiating out to the Hexi Corridor in the north, Gannan in the south and Tianshui in the east. Lanzhou has regular flights to the major cities in the country; Dunhuang and Jiayuguan also have a few flights to Xian, Lanzhou and Beijing. But winter sees few flights.
Travel by train is the best transportation mode while visiting Gansu. The Hexi Corridor and the Eastern Gansu are well connected by trains along the Silk Road sights and cities like Tianshui, Wuwei, Zhangye, Jiayuguan and Dunhuang. While traveling Gannan (Linxia, Xiahe and Langmusi), you have to rely on buses, no trains an no flights.

2.Tianshui: In the middle way between Lanzhou and Xian, Tianshui is composed of two parts - the booming town (Beidao) and the old town (Qincheng)15km apart connected by a highway. Famous for the Buddhist roack carvings, Maji Shan is located 35km south of Beidao.
3.Wuwei: Wuwei is the eastern end of the Hexi Corridoe. Han Tomb of Leitai is located in the old Leitai Park of Wuwei. Among the numerous unearthed artifacts the Bronze Flying Horse is the most valuable.
4.Zhangye: Zhangye is located in the middle section of the Hexi Corridor. The bell and drum tower in Zhangye, the biggest drum tower in the Hexi Corridor of the silk road district, was built in 1507.
5.Jiayuguan: It is the symbolic end of the Great Wall and the western fringe of ancient China. Muse-visit attractions are Jiayuguan Fort, Overhanging Great Wall, Weijin Tombs...
6.Dunhuang: Once the mecca for the merchant Caravan, exiled poets and officials, now it is still an oasis for the silk raod travelers.
7.Linxia:Mostly inhabited by the muslims, it is a place where you get fed and recharged for your trip to Xiahe or Lanzhou.
8.Xiahe: A monastic town nestled in a mountain valley, Xiahe attracts a great number of visitors each day. Its Labrang Monasery is one of the six major Tibetan monasteries of the Gelugpa.
9.Hezuo: The regional capital of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. It has a magnificent temple of Milarepa Palace with nine floors.
10.Langmusi: On the border between Gansu and Sichuan, Langmusi is an alpine Amdo Tibetan Village nestled in in a valley of steep grassy meadows and the evergreen trees of pine trees. Kerti Gompa on Sichuan side and Serti Gompa on the Gansu side are the highlights of the village.
