Tour Description
Our local tour guide meets you at your midtown hotel in Hangzhou. Begin with your West Lake walking round trip. Usually start your walking tour from Hubin - the Lakeside Park. The Lakeside Park of the West Lake is composed of 6 connected parks - Park 1, 2, ...6. All the six parks are free, a pedestrian area, a favorite place for the West Lake lovers.
Then walk pass over"Broken Bridge" and steop on the Bai Causeway. The Bai Causeway cuts the lake into two parts - the outer west lake and inner west lake. There are two stone bridges, "Broken Bridge" and "Jindai Bridge" on the Bai Causeway. The "Broken Bridge" is well known in China for its link with a famous Chinese love story - White Snake Legend, a Chinese version of Romeo and Julian. The Bai Causeway was built after the name of Bai Juyi, a famous poet and good governor of Hangzhou in Tang Dynasty Dynasty.
Soon you will see the Solitary Island. It is a peninsula ( Gushan ) projecting into the West Lake, once a temporary living palace for the imperial emperors who came to Hangzhou either for inspection or leisure sightseeing. On the Solitary Island, you will find Zhongshan Park, Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Louwailou Restaurant, Xilinyinshe and many more historical and scenic sites.
In the Louwailou Restaurant, former US President Richard Nixon once ate there with Premier Zhou Enlai in 1972, savoring the Longjing xiaren (shrimp cooked with Longjing tea) and many more. By the Xilin Bridge, a bridge connecting the Solitary Island and the bank, you will find a tomb of Ms Su Xiaoxiao. Su Xiaoxiao was a famous singsong girl and a poet in Hangzhou in Southern Qi Dynasty (479-502).
Curved Yard (Quyuan) and Lotus Garden, Su Causeway are your next two destintions. Breeze–ruffled Lotus at Quyuan Garden is one of the top ten scenic spots in Hangzhou. The Lotus garden - Quyuan used to be a vinery planted with many lotuses. Quyuan was at its best in summer when the breeze blows over the scented with delicate fragrance of lotus intermingled with the tasteful bouquet of wine. Now the garden has been widened to cover 5 sections - Yue Lake, Bamboo Garden, Lotus Garden, Winding Garden and Lakeside Forest. Su Causeway was named after Su Shi ( also known as Su Dongpo),who came to Hangzhou as governor in the early Song Dynasty (1086-1094). There are six bridges along the 2.6 km Su Causeway. "Dawn on the Su Causeway in Spring" is one of the top ten attractions in Hangzhou. Su Shi ( also known as Su Dongpo ) was a great poet. It was he who ordered the dredging of the mud lake overgrown with lots of the weeds. And farmers piled up all the mud into another causeway, in the style of Bai Causeway.
On the south of the West Lake are located many scenic and historical sites like Jing Ci Temple, Leifeng Pagoda and Long Bridge Park. Jinci Temple is situated on the Nanping Hill, south of the West Lake. Jingci Temple is attractrive to the pilgrims for various resons. One is that the famous rebel monk Ji Gong once live here in the temple during the Southern Song Dynasty. People like this monk because of his firm disregard for monastic rules. He ate meat. He drank wine. He helped the poor. The "Evening Bell Ringing at Nanping Hill" is one of the top Ten Views of West Lake.
Leifeng Pagoda is a five story tower with eight sides, located on Sunset Hill south of the West Lake. Originally it was constructed in the year AD 975. But it collapsed in 1924. It was rebuilt in 2002, since then it has become a popular tourist attraction in Hangzhou.
The Long Bridge Park is located at the southeast corner of West Lake. It is just a few centimetres above the water, a sight to give you much fantasy. The Long Bridge Which is Not Long.
Your West Lake walking round trip ends with a lakeside park - Orioles Singing in the Willows. Once an imperial garden in the Southern Song Dynasty is named after the pier (Liulang Pier) and the bridge (Liulang Bridge). Orioles Singing in the Willows is cited as one of the Ten Views of the West Lake. The green lawn with pavilions and flower terraces attracts a lot of people every morning to do morning exercises. Even in the evening, the landscape is impressive.
After simple local flavor lunch ( on your own ), you are arranged to have a walking tour of Qinghefang Pedestrian Street. Qinghefang pedestrian street is 460-meter long street, a well-preserved histotical street in Hangzhou. A great number of time-honored shops are located here, making it a must-go shopping place for tourists. Since the Southern Song Dyansty Qinghefang has been a prosperous area and the business center of Hangzhou. All kinds of folk arts fully embodies the local flavor and characteristic here. After the whole day tour, you are returned to your hotel in Hangzhou.
