Tiger Leaping Gorge, Lijiang
Tiger Leaping Gorge lies at the Jinshan River where Lijiang and Shangrila meet. The narrowest section of the river along the gorge is only 30 meters. It was said that a gigantic tiger had leaped across the gorge, hence its name.
Yulong and Haba Snow Mountains intercept the river, thus dividing the gorge into three sections, namely the Upper Tiger Leaping, the Middle Tiger Leaping and the Lower Tiger Leaping, including 18 dangerous shoals in all.
The fall from top to bottom of the gorge amounts to more than 3,000 meters, which allows the gorge to have the biggest drop in elevation around the globe.
The gorge enjoys the fame as being queer, perilous, sublime and magnificent in the world.
