Kunming Tour
Kunming is the regional capital city of Yunnan Province in the south west tip of China, a province with the highest diversity both in people and landscapes. Kunming is billed as "Spring City" for its the rich verdure of trees and plants with the most temperate climate. Beside its charming landscapes featuring parks and gardens, Kunming also boasts a host of historical sites and intriguing temples. It is worth exploring for 2-3 days.

Train Travel to Kunming
Kunming has two railway stations - Kunming Railway Station and Kunming South Station. Kunming Railway Station mainly serve Z trains, T trains and K trains, and Kunming Railway Station is a newly built railway station designed for high speed trains.

Kunming South Railway Station

Flight Travel to Kunming
Kunming Changshui International Airport is located about 25 km to the northeast of Kunming city center. Its destinations include Beijing, Shanghai, Xian and more as well as Deqin, Lijiang within Yunnan Province.

Overland Travel to Kunming
There are five passenger long-distance bus stations which are named in the five directions. Basically you go to a bus station in the direction you are going to travel. For an example, if you go to Dali or Lijiang, you need to take the bus from Kunming West Bus Station.

When to Visit Kunming
The best time to visit Kunming is from March through October, a period full of activities and festivals by the ethnic minority groups and also a blooming season in Kunming. Kunming's summer is not very hot with the average yearly temperature at 16 degrees celsius.
When it rains , it feels cold and you'd better bring a jacket. In recent years, winter is becoming colder and colder, pack warm if you visit Kunming in Winter.

Yunnan Provincial Museum is located on Wuyi Road, Kunming. It holds an exhibition focused on Yunnan's ethnic minorities, as well as a wide collection of artifacts from tomb excavations at Jinning on the southern rim of Dianchi Lake.
Dianchi Lake 滇池
Situated about 14 kilometers southwest of Kunming, Dianchi Lake is a highland limestone lake, and the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan, covering an area of about 300 square kilometers.
Western Hills 西山
Western Hills, also called "Sleeping Buddha Hills", lies in the western suburbs of Kunming. In Western Hills, there are a lot of wonderful scenic spots. Western Hills boasts an excellent environment with flourishing flowers and dense forest, providing tourists an excellent environment to enjoy the tranquility and marvelous scenery.
Stone Forest (Shilin) 石林
Stone Forest, or Shilin, is situated in the Lunan Yu Autonomous County 86 kilometers southeast of Kunming. Shilin is a notable set of limestone formations, a UNESCO listed site of remarkable Karst geography. The tall rocks appear to fall down to the ground in a type of stalagmites, with many looking like petrified trees thereby creating the illusion of a forest made of stone.
Dongchuan Red Earth 东川红土地
Dubbed as "God' Palette", Dongchuan Red Earth is a rising star, attracting more and more photography enthusiasts and casual travelers home and abroad. The colorful red earth is formed by the iron oxide in the soil. Its bumpy roads and primitive accommodations don't deter travelers at all. It is still an untouched place, for clean fresh air, fabulous views and superb color landscapes, a true photographers haven.
Qiongzhu Temple 邛竹寺
Qiongzhu Temple, or Bamboo Temple, is a Buddhist temple situated on Yu'an Mountain to the northwest of Kunming. The name of the temple refers to a type of bamboo. The temple is well known for exhibiting five hundreds painted arhat sculptures
Yuantong Temple 圆通寺
Yuantong Temple is the most famous Buddhist temple in Kunming. It is located in a protected natural depression and in recent years it has been expanded, with money from Thailand.
Daguan Park 大观公园
Daguan Park, located in the southwestern suburb of Kunming City, is a lakeside park. The park is a fantastic place in which to enjoy beautiful scenery and get close to nature and is also an excellent spot for an alfresco barbecue.
Green Lake Park 翠湖公园
The Green Lake Park is a beautiful city park in Kunming with four sub-lakes linked by bridges in the traditional style. Icafest is a good place to people-watch and mix with the locals. The road along the lake is awash with trendy bars, cafes and restaurants.
Chuangku 创库
Chuangku is the Chinese name of Kunming's Art Loft Community, which means "creative warehouse". This art community is located in a large abandoned industrial zone. Several thousand square metres' surface, the artists, students, business people, workers, advertising people and art fans from different places gather here for their art passion.
Golden Temple 金殿公园
The Golden Temple, also called Yingwu Hill in the northeastern outskirts of Kunming, is situated on Mingfeng Hill. It was built in 1671 during the Qing Dynasty.
Jinma Biji Memorial Archways 金马碧鸡坊
Jinma Biji literally means "Golden Horse and Jade Rooster", hence Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Memorial Archways. The two landmark archways is the symbol of Kunming. The Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Memorial Arches are 12 meters high and 18 meters wide, with exquisitely carved beams and painted pillars. The neighborhood is a bustling shopping place where you can explore and shop for a whole day.
Yunnan Nationalities Village 云南民族村
This village is a great opportunity to find out more about the Ethnic Minority groups. The local ethnic shows are most entertaining. A lot of walking is required in order to see all the different villages. The variety and colorful costumes are amazing.
Black Dragon Pool 黑龙潭公园
Black Dragon Pool is one of the ancient scenic spots which is located at the foot of Longquan Hill and 12 kilometers northeast of Kunming.The Black Dragon Pool is surrounded by towering old trees and bamboo groves。
Kunming Horticulture Expo Garden 世界园艺博览园
Located in the northeast suburbs of Kunming, Kunming World Horticultural Expo Garden is the site of the 1999 Kunming International Horticultural Exposition. Kunming Horticulture Expo Garden consists of five big exhibition halls, seven theme gardens, three outdoor showplaces and two big squares.
Get Around in Kunming
The traffic conditions are bad in Kunming, and even worse at peak hours. You should always plan head, especially you are going to catch your flight or train. Public buses run from 6:00 am to 9:00 or 10:00 pm with bus fares ranging from 1 yuan to 4 yuan. Most of the city center buses are without bus conductors and need exact change. Bus routes are marked on some local maps, but are not always accurate.
Kunming plans to build 6 metro lines and Line 2 and Line 6 have been finished. The Line 2 runs from north to south passing the city center; Line 6 connects Kunming East Bus Station and Kunming Airport.
Many hostels and hotels serve bike rental for about 15 or 25 yuan per day. Taxis start at 8 yuan and make sure the driver uses the meter to avoid being scammed.

Local Cuisines in Kunming
Kunming food belongs to Yunnese cuisine which blend fresh ingredients offered by the moderate climate with mild herbs and spices. The balmy weather produces hundreds of species of mushroom which dominate many dishes.
The city has many upmarket restaurants serve up international flavors. Back lanes and side streets, especially north of Dongfeng West Road and Jinbi Road are packed with eateries and restaurants which offer local specialties hotpot, grilled geese and so on. Typical Kunming dishes are Over the Bridge Rice Noodles ( Guo qiao mi xian ), Steam Potted Chicken and Smoked Smelly Bean Curd, a popular night stall snack.
