Pingyao Wangjia Courtyard
Wangjia Courtyard is situated on the north of the Jingsheng Village, Lingshi County, about 35kms from the ancient city Pingyao. The courtyard is on an north-south axis with the main halls facing the east. The Wangjia Courtyard occupies a commanding position as it was built on a small hill.
Covering an area of 34,450 square meters, the Wangjia Courtyard is composed of three parts: the east part, the west part and Xiaoyi Ci (Xiaoyi Ancient Temple). The Wangjia Courtyard is a close group architecture complex, named “the first residence of China”.
Just like other Chinese traditional architecture, woodcarving, brick carving, or stone carving could be found everywhere. Some are carved on the eaves, ridgepole, screen wall and some are carved on shrines, windows and gates, and so on, all of which are incredibly lifelike and marvelously conceived.
The buildings here not only embody the grandness of those in northern China, but also the elegance of those in southern China. The Wangjia Courtyard is the combination of the architecture art and paintings, calligraphies, poems at the same time. It is the pride of the locals even the Chinese.
