Shanghai Long Hua Pagoda and Temple

Situated in Longhua Town, Xuhui District, as to the exact dates, the pagoda and temple were originally built between the 10th and the 13th centuries. The temple has the longest history and maximal size. It is said the temple was built by Song Quan, Emperor of Wu Country during Three Kingdoms Period for his mother.

There are Bell and Drum towers on the east and west sides of Tianwang Palace. The sound of the evening bell of Longhua was known as one of the old traditions of Shanghai. On New Year’s Eve, the bell is rung 108 times at midnight. To hear this is considered good luck.
The Pagoda was also built by Song Quan to treasure up the Sheli. The present seven-storeyed pagoda is just over 40 meters high. Each layer have eaves, porch, wind-bell hung on the eaves. The pagoda was designed as the Brick and wood structure setting up the wooden floors. In 2000, in front of the pagoda a square of 5,000 square meters was expanded, surrounded by the porch, the bridge and pavilion.
