Shanghai Longhua Martyr Cemetery
Situated in southwest of Shanghai City, near the Hualong Ancient Temple, Longhua Martyr Cemetery is the site of “Song Hu Police Headquater” of Kuomingtang and the former address of Longhua Park.
It is one of the very few places in Shanghai where it is actually quiet. You do not hear the noise of cars and there are hardly any people. The cemetery is covered with trees including peach, maple, pinaster, etc. In summer, you are allowed to walk and sit on the grass (very unusual for China). In front of the gate is a great square. A piece of red rock stands tall and upright there, the red color implying the subject of the cemetery. There are eight parterres, four found and four square opposite to each other.
The cemetery is divided into eight areas: Commemorate and Look with reverence Section, Steles Sites Section, Martyr Tomb Section, Ashes Storage Section of Revolutionary Cadre, Rest Area, Relaxation Section, etc. The museum is located in a glass pyramid, and is actually quite interesting. And not unimportant for tourists, most exhibits and pictures have English descriptions. It gives a view of life in China in the time before the Communists took over power and it has photos of all the “martyrs” that were executed during that time. The Memorial Hall of Martyr is shaped as Red Sun, symbolizing that the spirit of martyrs is as bright as the sunshine.
