Shanghai Song Qingling's Former Residence
Song Qingling, the wife of the revolutionist, Sun Yatsen, was born in Shanghai in January, 1893. She lived at this house on Huaihai Lu at various stages in her life until she died in 1948. She contributed her whole life to the Chinese people democracy and the socialism enterprise, promoting world peace awareness and the technology advancement. Song Qingling is one of founders of People’s Republic of China and was honored as “Honorary President” of the People’s Republic.
Covering an area of 4,330 square meters, the house is a pretty western-style three-storied villa. Both this house and Sun Yatsen’s former residence are fascinating insights into old Shanghai. In the front is a big piece of lawn and surrounded by camphors green all the year round. There is a pleasant garden here too. The first floor is the living room, dinning room and the studio. The Living room is not large, but clean, simplicity, as well as elegance consistent with the charm of the hostess. On the lobby walls hang portraits of Dr.Sun Yatsen, Chairman Mao and Madame Song taken when Mao came to visit. It was the room here that Song Qingling met leading members of the Party and Government such as Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De,etc., as well as entertained numerous foreign heads of government. The second floor consists of Song Qingling’s bedroom, office and the nursemaid, Li Yan E’s bedroom. Until now, the dwelling arrangement is kept intact. Song Qinglin was engaged in the state affair before she died.
