Shanghai Xu Guangqi Tomb
Xu Guangqi is a famous scientist and his works General Book on Agriculture and Politics is an epoch-making works in technology history of our country. Besides, he is also an astronomer, agronomist and one of the forerunners of domestic and foreign cultural exchange. His given name was Zixian, while literary name was Yuanhu. Because Shanghai is his hometown, after he passed away in Beijing, he was buried in the joining place of Fahua Creek and Zhoajia Creek in Shanghai at that time, where most of his offsprings also lived there. That is the cause of the name “Xujiahui.”
With a total of 10 graves, the tomb buried Xuguanqi and his wife and around the tomb is their four couples of grandsons and grandson’s wives. Before 1949, there were Stone Sheep, Stone Horse, China Watch, Torii surrounded the tomb. However, all of the cultural relics were destroyed after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The current artistic architectures including the stone sheep, stone hors, etc, were rebuilt in 2003 recurring the majestic appearance of the tomb in those years. The path in front of the tomb was extended to 150 square meters with granite, standing the new granite effigy of Xu Guangqi dressed in half-chest official clothes. Both sides of the tomb are thick cypresses and evergreen trees. On the east side of the tomb is a porch displaying part of Xu Guangqi’s scripts.
