The Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen in Shanghai
Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925), beloved founder of the Chinese Republic (1911), lived here with his wife, Song Qingling. The residence was supported by overseas Chinese in Canada who collected money to purchase the house in support of Dr. Sun’s revolutionary activities. Two famous books: Sun Wen’s Theory and The Industry Programme were written here and in September 4, 1922, a meeting on the organization of Kuomintang was held on the lawn of the residence.
With an area of 1,000 square meters, all the rooms are arranged as what they were like when Dr. Sun live here and the house is a fascinating insight into the life of the revolutionary man. The residence is a two-storeyed western-style building, with a lawn and garden in front of it. The first floor includes the living room and dinning hall. The bedroom and study are upstairs. In the process of clearing up the residence, a batch of cultural relics that has been treasured for 30 years were found and now are displayed to the public all of which record the outstanding achievement of Sun Yat-sen during the revolutionary activities in Shanghai including Fundamentals of National Reconstruction, the English manuscript of The Industry Programme, the Map of China drawn by him as well as more than 100 photos that record Sun Yat-sen’s revolutionary activities.
