After a contest that saw four contenders poll out, leaving only two cities left in the race, Beijing in China has emerged triumphant as the host of the 2022 Winter Olympics.
It beat Almaty in Kazakhstan to win the bid , after Oslo, Stockholm, Lviv and Krakow all dropped out for financial or poitical reasons.
The victory secure Beijing's legacy as the first city to host both the Summer and Winder Olymoics, having already hosted the 2008 Games.
Beijing's Winter Olympic bid proposed that the Games be split between three sites:one in the city of Zhangjiakkou, 190km from Beijing in Hebei province ;another in Yanqing, a mountainous region to Beijing's north west; and a third in the city itself. Zhangjiakou will host all cross-country, biathlon, ski jumping and snowboarding events, Yanqing will be used for alpine skiing, bobsleigh, luge and skeleton, and the capital will be home to the opening and closing ceremonies, figure skating, speed skating, ice hockey and curling events.
10 best Winter Olympic moments
Where's the snow?
Almaty in Kazakhstan was always going to be the underdog in the competition - a young country and former Soviet republic in Central Asia most windely known as the homeland of Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat character, going up against the world's most populous nation and global economic powerhouse.
However, much of its bid was based on its long history of winter sports, numerous mountain peaks and plentiful snow cover; the tag line to Almaty's campaogn was" keeping it real", perhaps a not so subtle dig at Beijing, which isn't known for it's skiing and snowboarding scene.
But Liu Peng, the president of the Chinese Olympic Commitee, has been at paints to defend China on this score, saying:"Ski resorts have been operating in Zhangjiakou for decades".
"Beijing 2022 will bulid on its existing snowmaking capability to supplement natural snow fall".
World's most suprising ski resorts
Mr Peng also asserted that hosting the Games will increase interest in winter sports in China:"Winter sports feveris sweeping our nation. Twenty years ago China had less than 10 ski resorts. We now have more than 500."
Beijing has called on the world-leading resort of Verbier, known for its effcient lift system and extensive expert terrain,to help it prepare.
A10-year contract has been signed between Beijing and the Swiss resort, and a 20-year plan for development is under appraisal. This includes assistance in the design and operation of ski lifts, as well as on-site training, with the ultimate goal that facillties are eventually all Chinese-run.
General manager of Verbier, Eric Balet said:"Long-term development is something that absolutely deserves our long-term attention."
He spoke positively about the potential for creating artificial snow in Zhangjiakou and Yanqing, one of the biggest issues to consider when selecting Winter Olympic sites. While there is still work to do on infrastructure and facilities, the altitude, humidity, typical snowfall and agricultural conditions are ideal for snowmaking, according to Mr Balet.
Where can you ski?
Around Beijing there are a myriad of options: Shijinglong resort in Yanqing,Nanshan resort in Miyun, Yuyang resort and Huaibei resort in Pinggu. There are also Chongli, Saibei, Wanlong and Duolemeidi resorts around confirmen Olympic site Zhangjiakou City, three hours' drive from downtown Beijing or 40 minutes on the high-speed train currently under construction, to be completed in time for the Games.
No British tour operators currently run ski holidays to Beijing and the ski areas in the surrounding suburbs-but wining the Olympic bid could change all that, as it did for Sochi and Pyeongchang.
