Xian Peasant Painting Huxian Country
In south west of Xi’an, about 38 kilometers away, there is a country-Huxian, which is named “the country of Chinese folk painting in modern times”. It adds an important art to Xi’an, the ancient county, with its bright and colorful peasant paintings. Nowadays, it is called “the birthplace of the paintings”.
The painting movement is said o have originated in the late 1950s and during 1966-1976 Cultural Revolution the painting was shown abroad to prove the outside world that common, ordinary workers could produce works of art. At that time, the subjects of the paintings often focused on ordinary life as well as work. Many of the paintings are tend to the politics, with the title like “I Grow Grain and Cotton for our Motherland” and “Never Forget the State after a Good Harvest”. Today, the ordinary aspects of people’s lives are still the theme of the paintings. In addition to focusing on the work, the paintings pay more attention to all parts of the life, including festivals, parades, the harvest, music, village traditions, farm animals, winter, kitchen work and lovely children. All of these will encourage you to join the celebration of life.
It is undoubted that the peasant painting is the most brilliant page in the history of Huxian, Xi’an of China.
