Xian Temple of Flourishing Teaching
Situated at the foot of Shaoling Plateau and 20 km south of Xi’an City, the Temple of Flourishing Teaching is one of the most important Chinese Buddhist temples. It is the burial place of Xuanzang. Xuanzang, the well-known pilgrim in the Chinese history, spent 15 years traveling to India and brought Buddhist scriptures back to China. In 664 Xuanzang passed away and after he was buried in a pagoda in 669, the Temple of Flourishing Teaching was built on the site. In order to encourage the development of the Buddhism, Emperor Tang Suzong (Li Heng, 711-762) wrote two characters “Xin Jiao (Flouring Teaching)”in the stupa, then the Temple of Flourishing Teaching won its name.
Walking into the entrance, in the middle the sculpture of Sakyamuni with a height of 3.2 meters will catch your eye first. The Lying Buddha, 9 meters long, was carved by camphor wood. The temple is consisted of three courtyards, the Front courtyard, the East courtyard and the West courtyard. The Mountain Gate, the Bell and Drum Bell Devajara Hall (Daxiong-Baodian) and Preach Hall stand densely in the Front Courtyard. The Buddhism scriptures are stored in the East Courtyard. Xuanzang Pagoda is situated in the West Courtyard. The five-story brick pagoda is about 21 meters (68.9 ft) high enshrining the sculpture of Xuanzang on the first floor.
