Located in the Chang’an Country about 17.5 kilometers south of Xi’an City, the Xiangji Temple was established in 706 A.D. by Huai Yun in honor of the accomplishment and the contributions of his teacher Shandao, who pioneered the Pure Land Buddhism. The name “Xiangji” symbolize Shandao was as religious as “Xiangji” Budda—the sacred ancient Indian Buhhda.
In Xiangji Temple, there are two diagnostic pagodas. The larger one is named Shandao pagodas. It is built in 680 A.D. during Tang Dynasty with a height of about 33 meters. Surrounding the temple, there are twelve Buddha amazingly carved half-naked, which are actually the curiosa. The smaller one made of brick was built to commemorate Jingye-another ardent follower of Shandao.
The temple was in fashion for a period during Tang Dynasty. Huai Yun called in Buddhists from all directions to hold ceremonious fete. Wang Wei, the renowned landscape poet of Tang Dynasty, visited the temple and composed a poem to admire the attractive of the temple.
