Shenzhen Travel Guide
Location:Shenzhen s a city of sub-provincial administrative status in southern China's Guangdong province, situated north of Hong Kong and on the eastern shore of the Pearl River Delta.
History:
Shenzhen was once a fishing village as the kingdom of the late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping and the first of China’s Special Economic Zones as a result of its proximity to Hong Kong.
Established in the year 1979, Shenzhen was formerly a prosperous British colony.
The location of Shenzhen was chosen so that it would attract industrial assets from Hong Kong as both these places share identical language, dialect and culture. The concept, however, proved to be a successful one, thus attracting further investment prospects for global trade and economic reforms. Eventually, Shenzhen became one of the largest cities in the Pearl River Delta region, which is the largest economic base in the world.
Formerly known as the Bao’an County, Shenzhen was promoted to the level of a prefecture under the province of Guangdong in November1979. In May 1980, it was formally nominated as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). In November1980, it was given the right of provincial economic administration. It is the king, Deng Xiaoping, who should be credited with the economic revival of Shenzhen, and that of China at large.
For five months in 1996, Shenzhen was home to the Provisional Legislative Council and Provisional Executive Council of Hong Kong.
Transportation:
Shenzhen enjoys convenient transport routes with good air, rail and road links to most major Chinese cities. Hong Kong is also very accessible and less than a one-hour train trip.
Shenzhen Baoan International Airport is located 32 kilometers from the urban area. There are about 107 domestic and international airlines opened, connecting Shenzhen and 80 other cities both home and abroad.
Shenzhen Railway Station acts as an important transportation hub connecting Hong Kong to Mainland China. The train station is right on the Hong Kong Border on Jianshe Rd.
Several long-distance bus stations in Shenzhen operate routes around Guangdong Province and beyond to cities like Guangzhou, Chaozhou, Guangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, Hebei, Anhui and Sanya. The three major stations are Yinhu Bus Station, Futian Bus Station and Luohu Bus Station.
Hotels:
Purported five star accommodations abound in Shenzhen, though the city can't hold a candle to neighboring Hong Kong's and Macau's sparkly luxury options.
The good news is that deep discounts can be found, especially if you visit during the week (up to 50% off weekend prices), making Shenzhen's high-end hotels quite affordable. With all those foreign business-types coming to town, there's no shortage of business-type hotels, but these can always double as comfortable and convenient places for pleasure travelers to crash and take advantage of the gyms, spas, bars and copy machines with which they are often decked.
Whether you're a high-roller coming to finalize that big deal or a curious visitor come to gawk at the theme-park capital of China, there's a hotel for you at whatever you consider to be a reasonable price (this is still Mainland China, so the "always bargain" rule applies).
Dining:
Because Shenzhen is a migrant city, all of China's regional cuisines are represented here. Restaurants range from hole-in-the-wall establishments for homesick working class arrivals to opulent food palaces for businessmen and politicians entertaining clients.
If you are a foreigner, spending ¥100 on a fantastic meal is no problem (though, you can spend ¥35 or less on a fantastic meal in Shenzhen). Treat yourself, and enjoy the wonderful food and variety of Shenzhen.
Nightlife:
Shenzhen has two famous streets: one street is located in Huaqiao City, the other street is located in the Sea World Square of Shekou District of Shenzhen. You can go to the bars and clubs for fun.
You can play some sports like bowling, ping pong and tennis in some clubs, which is absolutely a healthy method to keep fit.
Theatres and concert halls in Shenzhen like Poly Theatre, Grand Theatre, Shadu Song and Dance Hall are very famous.
Weather:
Shenzhen weather is mild and with plentiful sunshine and rainfall all year round due to its subtropical marine climate.
The summers here are exceptionally long, running for about six months and temperatures can reach 35 degrees C.
The winters in this city are much more bearable however, and temperatures rarely drop below 10 degrees C.
August and September are the best seasons to visit when the temperature is pleasant and the days are long. Shenzhen has abundant rainfall particularly during May to September so make sure you bring your umbrella.
