History: Hunan has a long history. According to archaeological finds and recorded history, there were human beings living in this area more than 8,000 years ago. Hunan Province was officially set up in 1664 during the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911). Its landscape is magnificent, and it is home to numerous men of great renown. It is the home province of Chairman Mao, founder of the People's Republic of China, and numerous other outstanding historical figures.
Climate: Hunan belongs to the mid-subtropical moist zone continental monsoon climate with four clearly contrasted seasons. The winter is cold and short. The summer is hot and long. The annual precipitation of rainfall is 1,300-1,700 mm.
Transportation: Hunan has five airports (another two are under construction), six main railway lines, highways with total mileage ranking the third among 23 provinces in China, and relatively convenient waterway transportation.
Local Specialties: The traditional local specialties include Changsha Xiang Embroidery, Liuyang Fireworks and Firecrackers, Yueyang Fan, Changsha Xiang Lotus, and Yueyang Whitebait (salangid), etc.
Local Food: Xiang Cuisine (Hunan Cuisine) is one of the Eight Great Cuisines in China. Famous dishes include Dong'an Chicken, Peppery and Hot Chicken (Hot and Spicy Chicken), Orange Beef, Sweet and Sour Chicken, and Crispy Duck, etc.
Attractions: Mt. Hengshan- Also referred as Nanyue, Mt. Hengshan has eminent mountain and wonderful mountain scenery. It is a summer resort and leisure place for its religious reputation and gorgeous landscapes. Mt. Hengshan boasts 72 peaks., all of which are covered with thick green.
Dongting Lake -Situated in the north of Hunan Province, Dongting Lake is the second largest body of fresh water in China. Now the lake is divided into three sections: East Dongting Lake, South Dongting Lake, and West Dongting Lake. There are several islands in the lake; the most famous is Junshan Island, where silver needle tea is grown. Around the lake there is the Yueyang Tower, Mount Jun, Lu Sus Tomb, and a number of sites of historical interest.
Wulingyuan-Wulingyuan, located in northwestern Hunan in Dayong City, consists of Zhangjiajie, Suoxiyu, Tianzishan, and Yangjiajie and has an area of 396 square kilometers. Here, thousands of strange-looking peaks and wounding creeks form spectacular scenery rarely seen in other parts of the world. The newly developed Wulingyuan Scenic Spot is a natural wonder with its spectacular natural beauty.
