History: The formation of Tianjin has undergone a long period of time in the history. The name of Tianjin, first emerged during the early period of Emperor Yongle of China's Ming Dynasty, means a ferry crossing where the Son of Heaven has passed. In the second year of Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty (1404), Tianjin started building fortifications and defenses as a strategic military place. In 1860 Tianjin was turned into an open port. For years its industrial production and port trade volume were only second to Shanghai, becoming the second largest commercial city in China and the biggest financial and trading center in north China. After the founding of the People's Republic of China Tianjin was turned into a municipality directly under the central authorities.
Climate: In winter, wind often blows from the north because of the cold high pressure from Mongolia. In summer, affected by the subtropical high pressure from the western Pacific, the city sees much south wind. It has a semi-moist warm temperate continental monsoon climate, with an apparent feature of transit from continental climate to marine climate: there are four clearly divided seasons, but the duration of each is different; precipitation is not high, with uneven distribution over the year. The annual average temperature is 12.3 °C. The hottest month is July, during which the average temperature can reach 26 °C. January is the coldest month, its average temperatures being -4 °C.
Transportation: Airline-Zhangguizhuang Airport of Tianjin is open to air traffic with Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, Dalian, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Shanghai, Sanya, and so on.
Railway-The trains running on Beijing-Shanghai Line and Beijing-Harbin Line all stop at Tianjin Railway Station or Tianjin West Station. In additon, there are several runs of a bullet-shaped intercity express train from Tianjin to Beijing every day. The earliest express train sets off at 3:49 and the last one from Tianjin is at 18:50.
Highway-Tianjin enjoys a developed road network with national highways and part of city trunk orads forming the framework. Typical of ratiating roads, Tianjin links its outside ring road with freeways and national highways. In additoin, it has dozens of passenger bus terminals where a multitude of buses depart for nearby counties.
Waterway-Tianjin Harbor, capable of transportation of river and sea, is the largest artificial one in China. Beitang Port is located at the confluence of Ji Canal in the southeast of Tanggu District and the Xinhe River in Yongding. There are passenger ships available at Tianjinfor citeis such as Dalian and Yantai.
