Qinhuangdao City is a coastal city in Hebei province. It is situated about 300 km east of Beijing, on the Bohai Gulf. Qinhuangdao Harbor is the main port of Hebei province. "Qinhuangdao" means "the island of Qinhuang" ( the island of the first Emperor in Qin Dynasty ). The Qin Emperor - Qin Shi Huang ( 2000 years ago ) is said to have been looking for immortality on an island here, hence the name. Beidaihe is one of the three urban districts under the jurisdiction of Qinhuangdao City. The other two districts are Haigang District and Shanhaiguan District. Haigang District is where Qinhuangdao Municipality is located. "Haigang"means "Harbor". It is also where the Qinhuangdao Harbor lies. In 215 BC, China's first emperor Qinshihuang arrived here on his fourth eastern inspection and sent Lusheng and Han Zhong out to the sea to look for the immortal for him.
Shanhaiguang District is well known for the "First Pass Under Heaven", considered the No.1 Pass of the Great Wall and the eastern end of the Great Wall, stretching 23 meters into the sea like a dragon drinking water, hence its name - the "Old Dragon's Head." Shanhaiguan's most exciting activity is a hike up the Great Wall's first peak - Jiaoshan Great Wall.

Train travel to Qinhuangdao
The city of Qinhuangdao has three railway stations - Qinhuangdao Railway Station, Shanhaiguan Railway Station and Beidaihe Railway Station. For most visitors to Qinhuangdao, train ride is the best way of transport. For the time being, it is advisable to use Shanhaiguan Railway Station if you come from Beijing and other cities.
Plentiful trains run between Beijing and Qinhuangdao (via Shanhaiguan and Longjiaying) including D trains, G trains,T trains and K trains. Of course, D trains are highly recommended for the trains to and from Qinhuangdao, taking about 2 or 3 hours from Beijing.

When to Visit in Qinhaungdao
Qinhuangdao enjoys a mild continental monsoon climate, consisting of distinctive seasons and mild winters and summers. The average temperature year round is 10.1ºC, with an annual average rainfall of 698mm and relative humidity of 62%.For summer beach bathing, the best time to visit Beidaihe is from July to September. If you have a hobby of bird watching, But the best time for bird watching here is April, May, October and November.
If you are only interested in the historical sites, like Jiaoshan Great Wall, Old Dragon's Head and First Pass under the Heaven, it makes no big difference regarding to the visiting time.
Qinhuangdao City Layout
Qinhuangdao is a narrow coastal city skirting off the Bohai Sea from northeast to southwest with three major districts, e.g. Shanhaiguan (north), Haigang (in the middle, also the seat of the Qinhungdao Government) and Beidaihe (in the south, the famous beach area.)Shanhaiguan is famous for its historical sights like Old Dragon's Head, Jiaoshan and The First Pass under the Heaven.
Haigang District is the political and economic center of Qinhuangdao.
Bedaihe is the famous summer retreat with beautiful beaches.
Shanhaiguan is about 20km northeast of Haigang District (Qinhuangdao) and Bedaihe is 15 km southwest of Haigang District. The three districts are well connected by buses and taxis.
Amazingly each of three districts of Qinhuangdao has its own railway stations. Adding to the complication of the railway management, Shanhaiguan Railway Station belongs to the administration of Shenyang Railway Bureau while Qinhuangdao and Beidaihe managed by Beijing Railway Bureau.
Get around in Qinhuangdao
Taxis in registered in Haigang District of Qinhuangdao can not carry passengers in Beidaihe and Shanhaiguan Districts, except for chartered ones. Qinhuangdao Taxis are cheap. Xiali Taxis

The hotels in Qinhuangdao are largely scattered around Haigang District and Beidaihe. There are very few hotels in Shanhaiguan. For summer time, stay at Beidaihe is highly recommended, but be sure to book far in advance to secure your rooms due to the high season. For non-tourist season, most people choose to stay in Haigang District of Qinhuangdao mainly due to the fact that most of the hotels in Beidaihe are closed and the town is dead.
