Mt. Hengshan in Datong
Located in Hunyuan Country of Shanxi Province in Northern China, Mt. Hengshan is one of the five mythical mountains of China (the others being MT. Taishan in Shandong Province; Mt. Huashan in Shaanxi Province; Mt. Hengshan in Hunan Province and Mt. Songshan in Henaa Province). It is sometimes known as the Northern Hengshan and should not confused with the Southern Hengshan in Hunan Province.
Legend has it that 4,000 years ago when King Shun visited the mountain and saw the lofty peaks, he named it the “Northern Sacred Mountain”. During the Qin Dynasty (221-206BC), Emperor Shihuang named 12 famous mountains, and Mt. Hengshan was regarded as the “Second Mountain in the world”. At ancient time, it was regarded as a holy mountain and were given sacrifice on the order of the Emperor.
Of the five mythical mountains of China, Mt. Hengshan is boasted for its steepy ridges, splendid peaks, exotic-shaped temples and gushing fountains, together with oddly-shaped and forests of ancient trees, which constitute a beautiful landscape.
It consists of 108 peaks and spanning 150 kilometers. The highest peak on the mountain, the Tianfeng Peak, reaches a height of 2,017m/6620ft. Its steep northern slope is covered with pine trees and located on its southern slope are temples and monasteries built by ancient kings and emperors to worship their ancestors.
Standing high in the mountain, with the clouds floating under your feet and the wind in the pine trees resounding above your head, the mountain peaks occasionally appearing and disappearing in the clouds, one will be reluctant to leave.
