Hunan Province is situated on the south of Dongting Lake ( the second largest fresh water lake in China), hence the name "Hunan" which literally means "south of the lake". Hunan Province is also nicknamed "Xiang" named after the 817km Xiang River, the largest river in Hunan, passing Yongzhou, Hengyang, Changsha and emptying itself into Dongting Lake linked to Yangtze River. Hunan is dubbed as "Furong Kingdom " mainly due to the fact that it has a long tradition of the hibiscus petals (Furong in Chinese) raising and planting.
Hunan Province has its direct administration of 12 cities, one autonomous region and 212 counties with its capital at Changsha. Shaoshan and Changsha, the revered birthplace of Mao Zedong and more former communist leaders from Hunan including Liu Shaoqi, Peng Dehuai and Hu Yaobang.
Hunan is also blessed with some of China's most beautiful landscapes and fecund scenery. Wulingyuan Scenic Area was listed with UNESCO World Heritage 1990. Mt. Langshan is a national geopark, a best place to see the Danxia Landscape. Hengshan Mountain is one of the Five Great Mountains in China.
Fenghuang (Phenix Ancient Town) is a well-preserved ancient town with many distinctive architectural remains of Ming and Qing styles. Dehang is a Miao hamlet offering a wide range of treks into picturesque countrysides and karst peaks. Hongjaing Old Town recalls the town's Qing-dynasty prime day as a financial center.

When to Visit
Located in the mid-south of China, the subtropical Hunan has four distinct seasons - rainy spring, hot summer, dry autumn and cold winter. When to go?Changsha: Autumn. Avoid the scorching summer and visit Changsha at its best in autumn.
Zhangjiajie (Wulingyuan): Spring and autumn. Trek through the forest and karst peaks of Wulingyuan Scenic Area in green and flowery spring and colorful autumn.
Fenghuang: You are welcome to visit Fenghuang, or other old towns like Dehang and Furong in the west of Hunan in four seasons.

Hunan Province can be reached by flights through the airports at Changsha, Zhangjiajie, Changde, Yongzhou. Changsha Huanghua International Airport fers service to more than 56 domestic destinations (including Hong King and Taiwan), and flights to Thailand, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam.
Hunan has an extensive network of railway linking Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Luoyang and more cities. Hunan ranks the first place in the mileage of expressways on a provincial level totalling 4064km. All the 13 major cities in Hunan are linked by expressways.

What to Buy
With a history of over 2,000 years, Hunan Embroidery is one of China's four famous styles of embroidery. Hunan Embroidery is well known for figures, animals, landscapes, flowers and birds, which are all vivid and lifelike. The most famous works of Hunan Embroidery are the hanging panels of Tigers, Lions and Birds Adoring the Phoenix.
Hunan produces the best Red Porcelain, also known as "the Red under the Glaze", taking red as the main color, and decorated with beautiful patterns made of gold and other precious metals. The Red Porcelain is noble, elegant and refined.
Hunan is also well known for its green tea - Yunwu Green Tea. Yunwu Tea as its name manifests, it grows at the top and remote side of Mount Hengshan. Nanyue Bamboo Carvings is a local famous product. Well chosen Nanyue bamboo is perfect raw material for bamboo carvings. These carvings have unique styles. Most of them are carved as flowers, animals, landscapes or buildings.
Hunan Food
Hunan food, also known as Xiang cuisine, is mainly composed of the food from the Xiang River region, Dongting Lake, and western Hunan province. Hunan food is one of the eight famous cuisines in China. It is famous for its spiciness, freshness and deep colour. Normal Hunan food cooking skill include stewing, frying, pot-roasting, braising, and smoking. Hunan cuisine is known for being purely hot, different from Sichuan cuisine which is known for its distinctive mala (hot and numbing) seasoning and other complex flavour combinations.
Notable dishes include Mao's braised pork, Steamed fish head in chili sauce, Changsha-style stinky tofu, "Dry-wok" chicken, Homemade-style bean curd, Pearly meatballs and many more.
Nightlife in Hunan
After dark, major tourist cities and foreign visitors-frequented towns and places come alive. Each town or city has its own good places to drink and entertain.Changsha: Taiping Street, one of the few surviving streets, a good place to drink with a mix of bars.
Zhangjiajie: Its nightlife is different from the nightlife of big cities. It is colorful too in different local flavor. At night, the streets of Zhangjiajie are full of vendors selling barbecue and local snacks. Zhangjiajie has bars, foot massages, karaoke, bars, dance halls and so on. Then you must have no idea of many folk customs are so attractive. These unique and interesting flavors can be found in theaters of Zhangjiajie such as Mei Li Xiang Xi and Zhang Jia Jie Theater and others places such as Tujia Folk Village and Dayong Town. Fenghuang: It has a nice night marekt just north of Hong Bridge with food stalls setting up for barbecue and many kinds of meat, fish and vegetables. There are cafes ad bars on the steets of Fenghuang.
