Yangtze River Cruises Information
The Chongqing - Yichang waterway is about 648km. The Three Gorges, Qutang, Wu and Xiling put together, approximately total 114km in length.
1.Qutang Gorge: 8 KM starting from the Baidi Town of Fengjie to Daxi Town of Wushan - Also known as Kui Gorge, the most awe-inspiring and the narrowest of the three gorges. It is only about 100 meters or so at its narrowest point.
2.Wu Gorge: 40KM starting from the mouth of the Daning River( the Little Three Gorges ) of the riverside town of Wushan to the Guandukou Town of Batong( Guandukou is 17km west of the riverside town of Badong County ) - Its cliffs tower ot over 900 meters, topped by the sharp, jagged peaks on the either bank. A total of 12 peaks are perched on the either side, including Goddess Peak and Peak of the Immortals.
3.Xiling Gorge: 66KM starting from the mouth of Xiangxi River to the Nanjin Guan Pass of Yichang - the longest of the three gorges and the Three Gorges Dam stands at Sandouping in the middle section of the Xiling Gorge.
The Three Gorges Dam is in the middle section of the Xiling Gorge at Sandouping, 44km upstream from the city of Yichang. It is the world's largest hydro-electric power station that traverses the Yangtze River aimed both at harnessing the power of the Yangtze to create hydroelectric power and controling the river to prevent flash flooding that historically caused a great deal of damage.
The huge project took 17 years starting from 1994 to 2009 with total investment of 180 billion Yuan RMB and rural-urban migration of one million people. On a Chongqing Yichang cruise, most of the cruise ships will pass through the two 5-stage locks of the dam. Visitors will observe the five-step ship lock, the diversion canal, the dam itself.
Most of the cruise vessels will dock at the downstream of the dam and then take a bus toward the top of the observation deck on the hill of its northen bank for a birds-eye view of the dam. In addition, an exhibition room displays a model of the dam, and offers passengers another opportunity to ask questions and learn about the benefits of this amazing project.
Three Gorge & Namesake Dam Cruise Route
There are two kinds of the cruise routes - Downstream from Chongqing to Yichang and upstream from Yichang to Chongqing. There is no big no differences whether you sail from Chongqing to Yichang downriver, or from Yichang to Chongqing -- upriver. But they do have some slight difference below: 1) Shore excursions: small differnce in land arrangement
2) Time: going upstream takes one more day than going downstream.
3) Price: The rate of upriver cruisess are lower than those of downriver cruises

Next come back to your deluxe cruise ship and sail through Xiling Gorge, the last, the longest and most scenic of all the gorges. Finally, pass through the amazing Three Gorges 5-stage ship locks.

This morning, dock at Sandouping to visit the historic Three Gorges Dam project, the largest hydroelectric project in the world.

Day 01:

If you have large pieces of luggage, you are suggested to use airport - dock or train station - dock transfer service. When you are in the dock, it is still a long walk to the boat. First descend about 100 step steps to the bank of the river, then cross rickety platforms suspended over the water to your boat. Sometimes you have to continue to go across another large boat, cross through the employees's living quarters of the second boat, across another plank to a third boat, then up a few narrow flights of stairs to the reception of your boat!

1) There are about 8 long-distance bus stations in Chongqing. Each district nearly has one long-distance bus stations, with daily buses to Chengdu, Fengdu, Badong, Yichang, Wuhan and other cities.

1) There are over 20 piers in Chongqing. Most of the luxury cruise ships dock at Chaotianmen Pier. The Chaotianmen Pier is the starting point of the downstream cruise, near the Jiefangbei, the most famous shopping center in the west China.
