Kumbum Monastery, Xining
Kumbum Monastery (Tar'er Monastery in Chinese), situated in the Lusar Town of Huangzhong County, is 25 kilometers southwest of Xining City. It is one of the six major monasteries of the Tibetan Buddhism Gelug. It is also the birth place of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Tibetan sect of Gelug.
The whole complex, blending Han and Tibetan architectural styles, is a location of great historical and religious significance, as well as a stunning repository of Tibetan arts and cultural relics. The magnificent Large Golden Tiled Temple is the main building of the monastery. Other major structures include the Small Golden Tiled Hall, the Large Classics Hall, the Longevity Hall and the Eight Towers for Buddha, etc.
Kumbum Monastery is also a famous tourist destination in Xining, Qinghai. People are impressed by the profound history, the unique buildings, refined wall paintings, renown butter flowers, vivid Buddha statues, magnificent articles and decorations, numerous museum pieces and etc.
