Golmud Travel Guide
Location:Golmud, a county-level city of Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province, is located in the central-south part of the Qaidam Basin with an elevation of 2,809 meters.
History:
Golmud, sometimes spelled Ge'ermu or Geermu, means "Rivers" in local Western Mongolian dialect. Golmud used to be Qiang Field in the ancient times.
Golmud provisional committee was first established in 1956 by Qinghai Province. Golnud became a County in 1956, and became a city in 1980.
Transportation:
The best way to get to Golmud will be by plane. Golmud Airport operates flights to and from Xining and Xian on every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Passengers who want to fly to other cities can use the airport in Xining.
Golmud lies along the Qingzang railway (Qinghai-Tibet Railway), a 1956 km railroad that starts from Xining and ends at Lhasa.
City transport in Golmud is mainly by taxis or bus. There are both public buses and private minibuses within town.

Golmud has a cold arid climate, with long, cold winters, and warm, but cool summers. The temperature drops to −15.3℃ at night in January and rises to 24.7 ℃ during the day in July.
The average annual rainfall is only 41.5 mm. The annual average sunshine is 3,358 hours. In general, Golmud has adequate solar and heat resources.
The best time to visit Golmud is from July to September.
Attractions:
Wangzhang Salt Bridge
The Wanzhang Salt Bridge is located on the top of the Chaerhan Salt Lake of the southern Qaidam Basin. It is not really a bridge but an elevated roadway.
The Wanzhang Salt Bridge is 32 kilometers in total, which is equivalent to 10,000 Zhang (a traditional Chinese system of weights and measures). This Bridge is wide, long, and surrounded by spectacular views. Tourists can take cars here, or buy a bus ticket to Dunhuang.
Qarhan Salt Lake
Qarhan Salt Lake is one of the biggest salt lakes in Qaidam Basin which occupies 5848 square kilometers. In fact, it is one of the most famous inland salt lakes in the world.
The salt lake is more than 160 kilometers long from east to west and 20-40 kilometers wide from south to north. The thickness of the salt lake is 2-20 meters. There is more than 50 billion tons of sodium chloride in the salt lake. There are also other minerals in the lake such as magnesium, lithium, boron, iodine etc.
The weather in Qardam Salt Lake is dry and hot, and the best time to visit there is from April to October. Tourists can rent cars to get to the lake along the No.215 National Highway.
Kunlun Mountain Pass
Kunlun Mountain Pass is located in the middle section of Kunlun Mountain, about 160 kilometers south of Golmud City.
Kunlun Mountain is not only famous for its grandeur but also the color jade it produces, and the jade is called Kunlun Jade.
The altitude rises abruptly from 2,800 meters to 4,700 meters and the temperature and air pressure drop accordingly. You should get preparation for altitude stress when you get there.
