Location:Meizhou City is located in the northeast of Guangdong Province, adjoins to Wuping, Shanghang, Yongding and Pinghe counties in Fujian Province to the northeast, connects with Xunwu County in Jiangxi Province to the northwest, borders Longchuan County and Zijin County in Heyuan City of Guangdong Province to the west, and neighbors Luhe County of Shanwei City and Longcheng District and Jiexi County of Jiexi City in Guangdong Province to the south, and borders Chao'an County and Raoping County of Chaozhou City to the southeast.
History:
Meizhou has a long history. It was established as a prefecture named Jingzhou in the Nanhan (911-971), changed into Meizhou in the Northern Song Dynasty and Jiaying Prefecture in the Qing Dynasty.
After several subsequent shift of jurisdiction and change of popedom, it was turned into Meizhou City in 1988. Now Meizhou is a famous historical and cultural city.
Transportation:
Meizhou is a vital communication hub for the three provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, and Jiangxi. It is the bridge connecting the coastal and the inland areas. State Highways 205 and 206 run across the city.
Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou Railway and Meizhou-Kanshi Railway cross here. Expressways, state, provincial county and village highways reach all parts of the city. With regard to air transport, there are air routes to Guangzhou and Hong Kong. By water, the Mei River and Han River reach Chaozhou and Shantou.
Dining:
Meizhou is the agglomeration of Hakkas and therefore the cuisine in Meizhou handed down the traditional cuisine from Hakkas. Hakka cuisine is famous for its heavy taste and excellent cooing duration, and ranging in the most famous three cuisines with Chaozhou cuisine and Guangzhou cuisine.
Local delicacies include Baked Chicken in Salt, Beancurd in Stuffed with Minced Pork as well as Preserved Pork and Vegetables.
Weather:
Enjoying a subtropical monsoon climate, its hottest and coldest days usually appear in July and January. Weather in summer is hot and the temperature in summer and winter varies greatly. The rainfall mainly concentrates on the period from April to September.
Attractions:
Lingguang Temple
Located on top of Yinna Mountain, Lingguang is an ancient temple with 1500 years of history and one of the five most famous temples in Guangdong. It was set up by Pan Liaoquan who was the eminent monk in Tang Dynasty . This majestic temple contains Buddhist buildings, including the Grand Hall, Arhat Hall, Kwan-yin Hall, the bell tower, the drum tower, and other subsidiary structures.
Two ancient trees standing in front of the temple added a mystery. For over 1,600 years, one tree still flourishes with luxurious branches and prosperous leaves while the other which has been dead for nearly 400 years is still as big as the first tree.
Ye Jianying Memorial Garden
The Ye Jianying Memorial Garden is located in Huxing Village, Yanyang Town, Meixian County. It was built to commemorate the Chinese communist general Ye Jianying.
The initial construction covers an area of 321,494 square metres divided into four sections. With Ye‘s former residence in the centre, the cultural section reserves the original buildings, trees and ponds. The biological forest section has winding mountain paths with corridors, pavilions and stone sculptures.
The recreational section contains simulations of military training centres, farms, arboretums and Hakka streets. The core section is the Ye Jianying memorial with an exhibition area of 2,000 square metres.
