Visit Populus Diversifolia in Luntai
October 11, 2005, we arrive at Korla early in the morning and start for our destination today - Kuqa. Before we arrive at Kuqa, we are arranged to visit the populus diversifolia in Luntai, the the world's largest natural distribution area of diversifolia in Tarim River Basin. It is first time for most of the memeber on the tour to see diversifolia forest. Diversifolious Poplar Forest is located in the north of Taklimakan Desert, the middle portion of Tarim River. It is 70 km south to Luntai County. The world's largest populus diversifolia tree belt is distributed along the banks of Tarim River in Xinjiang.
It is said that the tree's unusual vitality enables it to survive for 3,000 years by "living for one thousand years, standing still for another one thousand years after death, and remaining not rotten for one thousand years.
After viewing the populus diversifolia trees, we drive to Kuqa and stay at Kuqa Hotel. This is a centrally located hotel. A few of the staff have a minimal grasp of English. But they are are friendly and eager to help.
